There are hundreds, possibly even thousands, of music festivals around the world that happen during all times of the year. If you live in the United States, you are probably very familiar with ones such as Coachella and Lollapalooza and may have already attended one, or even both.
After attending Lollapalooza a couple of times, I decided to venture out and take on a new festival this past summer. Bonnaroo, located in Manchester, Tennessee, gave me a whole new outlook on music and art festivals.
Here are five reasons why Bonnaroo should be your next music festival adventure:
1. Camping
Never before did I think sleeping in a damp tent in a hot Tennessee summer would be more enjoyable than an air-conditioned hotel with free breakfast and personal bathrooms. The camping atmosphere at Bonnaroo sets the entire tone for your weekend, and it's usually a good one. Meeting your tent neighbors, setting up camp with your own decorations and being completely submersed in nature was almost so exciting that I forgot what I was actually there to do!
2. Your fellow 'Roo attendees
As with most festivals, everyone attending is excited to see their favorite bands and artists (it is the whole point after all). However, the people I met at Bonnaroo were equally as happy to meet me as they were to see the musical acts. Every day as the crowd enters the festival grounds people are chanting, high-fiving and shouting out "Happy Roo!" to all that they meet.
3. The art
Bonnaroo is technically a music and ARTS festival. Until stepping inside the festival grounds I assumed the "arts" portion would really just be a few t-shirt stands and maybe the occasional local artisan. I was pleasantly surprised to see continuous rows of tents displaying locally made crafts and jewelry, festival clothing gear, hand-painted posters and artists displaying their own twist on music merchandise. I spent hours walking through the tents and had to refrain from buying everything I saw.
4. The music (obviously)
I could not rave about a music festival and not talk about the music itself! I was incredibly pleased by the wide variety of musicians playing at Bonnaroo. In one day I listened to an indie-folk band, a rapper, a popstar, a DJ and an alternative group. As a lover of all genres (with the exception of country), I was able to see some of my favorite artists all at once for the price of what could have been only one concert.
5. The Broo'ers Festival
A festival inside a festival? That's exactly what it is. If you are of legal age, you can enjoy the beer garden Broo'ers Festival inside Bonnaroo grounds. Underneath the giant white tent lies local, Tennessee beer breweries and individual brewers willing and eager for you to try their creations. The best part? The misting fans cooling you down so you can enjoy your craft beer in relaxation.
