Dogs are great animals to own either if you’re living with a big or small family. They are loving animals that are loyal and protective. Dogs can help teach important skills like taking care of another living being and help teach people to be more responsible. There are so many great benefits of having a family dog as they may make your family feel even more complete. With so many different breeds, some may wonder which one is best for their family. Here I will share with you the five best dog breeds for families based on a wide array of research and opinions from dog experts.

1. Newfoundland

This dog may not be a common household name but don’t let that stop you from looking into them for your family. According to Cesar’s Way, Inc., a website created by famous dog expert and trainer Cesar Milan, The Newfoundland is great for families with young children as they have been called “nature’s nannies”. They are large furry dogs but have a heart as big as them. The Newfoundland is a dog breed you can’t go wrong with for your family.

2.Beagles

Beagles are one of the most popular dog breeds around and there is a good reason for it. According to petmd.com, a veterinarian authored website, the beagle is a fantastic choice for families due to its smaller size and calm demeanor. Those factors along with the fact that beagles love being outdoors makes it a good dog for families that love to be active.

3. Irish Setter

The Irish Setter is a larger dog breed that tends to be on the calmer side making it a good choice for families that want a dog that isn’t too rambunctious. According to an article written by Purina, a large well-known pet company, the Irish setter is a mild mannered dog that requires steady exercise and regular grooming of its red shiny coat but is sure to please.

4. Labrador Retriever

The Labrador Retriever is one of the most popular breeds in the nation according to the American Kennel Club ,a widely known organization that specializes in purebred dogs. Labs are very smart and loyal dogs so they are not difficult to train. Lab puppies tend to have very high energy and require much attention but they will be fantastic to have around the home.

5. Collie

Last but certainly not least, the Collie is a well-known breed due in large part to the popular novel and short story about a Collie named Lassie. This dog breed is gentle and loves to be around people. Collies need pretty regular grooming and are a good size making them suitable around little kids that might play rough decreasing the risk of them hurting the dog. Overall, getting a collie for your family is a decision you are unlikely to regret.

Getting a dog for your family can make life that much more interesting and entertaining. If it is something that can be managed and you can dedicate the time, having a dog is a great experience. Hopefully this list gives you a better idea of some great dog breeds that are definitely worth taking a look at.
