Let me first start by saying I am not, in any way shape or form, a music journalist. To be clear, I am probably the most amateur of amateurs when it comes to such a topic. I am, however, known for dancing around my room to music and then considering that my "exercise for the day." Here are five artists that satisfy my three states of being: angsty, sappy, and badass.
1. Lewis Watson
I can't even begin to count how many love story scenarios I've thought up while listening to Lewis Watson; it's a sickening amount. From the first song of his I heard to his newest song, I've been hooked. I mean, what's better than a guy singing in his bathtub? (Yes, he's fully clothed, don't worry).
2. Little Mix
Growing up in a world of Spice Girls and Destiny's Child, it was inevitable that I would forever be a girl group fanatic. Not only are the women of Little Mix wonderful, funny, and kind, but they also have ridiculously good voices. Some of you may recognize them from their song "Wings" from a few years back, but their newest album, Get Weird, has a diverse range of pop songs that will make you want to get up and dance and ballads that will probably make you cry over a relationship you've never even had (guilty). Little Mix are wholly underrated, and they definitely give girl groups of the past a run for their money.
3. Melanie Martinez
As a self-proclaimed crybaby, I feel like Melanie Martinez is speaking directly to me in her song "Crybaby" (I mean, the music video came out on my birthday. Coincidence? Doubtful). Melanie got her start on season three of The Voice, but her artistry, individuality, and success are all her own. Plus, look how cool her hair is. Bonus.
4. The Coathangers
The Coathangers are a punk rock band from Atlanta. I am not well-versed in punk by any means, but as soon as I heard "Make It Right" and "Excuse Me" I was all, "I can see clearly now, my eyes have finally been opened to the wonders of the world. Also, get out of my way, this is my world now." Hooray for female-fronted bands!
5. Beyoncé
Come on, you didn't really think I was going to leave the Queen out of this list, did you? It's been over a week since"Lemonade", her visual album, was released, and I still can't comprehend the incredibleness of it all. I've had the album playing nonstop and I can easily say there is not one song that I don't like-Beyoncé effortlessly takes me from "independent woman pt. 3" to "okay, maybe love isn't so disgusting after all" (a rarity for me). P.S. I'm sorry to the people who live next to me, by now you've probably memorized all the lyrics. But then again...you're welcome.
