Trick or Treat, it’s October! At this point, you’ve probably binge-watched all of the Friday the 13th, Michael Myers, or the Nightmare on Elm Street movies dozens of times. But now you maybe want to see something a little different, maybe some family Halloween movies as well. In no particular order, here is a list presented to you of 31 underrated Halloween flicks.

1. Monster House (2006)

Starring Mitchel Musso (from Hannah Montana) and Cleveland’s own Fred Willard, this 2006 animated feature is both suspenseful and funny and will probably leave you wondering what secrets your neighbor is hiding in their house.

2. Scary Godmother: Halloween Spooktacular (2003)

A film like this will definitely get you into the Halloween spirit. Based on the comics and children’s book by Jill Thompson, Scary Godmother: Halloween Spooktacular has wacky humor that everyone of all ages will enjoy.

3. Coraline (2009)

Coraline is a one of a kind dark fantasy horror film because of the 3D stop-motion depicts what happens when an 11-year-old girl discovers a whole new dimension that is everything she has ever dreamed of.

4. It Follows (2014)

What makes this film interesting is that it’s full of symbolic messages and it’s supposed to resemble a dream, according to David Robert Mitchell, the director.

5. Return to Halloweentown (2006)

The final film of the Halloweentown series, Marnie is all grown up and is headed off to Halloweentown University (also known as Witch University). Watching this made me wish I could enroll in Halloweentown University.

6. Fun Size (2012)

Filmed right here in Cleveland, Fun Size will make you laugh and will probably be the worst nightmare for anyone who has had to take little kids trick or treating since Wren (played by Victoria Justice) loses her little brother while trick or treating.

7. Gremlins (1984)

Some may argue that this is more of Christmas film, some may beg to differ since it takes place during the holiday season. This film is full of surprises mainly because you see what happens when a Mogwai gets wet or drinks water or worst of all, is fed after midnight.

8. The Haunted Mansion (2003)

Based on the Disney Parks ride, watching this film brings back childhood memories because it felt like going back on the ride again. Although it’s kind of weird to see Eddie Murphy act in a Disney movie, looking back at his career as a comedian (look up Eddie Murphy's stand-up and you’ll see why I say that).

9. The Little Vampire (2000)

Jonathan Lipnicki stars in yet another childhood classic! This time, instead of befriending a mouse, he befriends a vampire named Tony.

10. The Addams Family (1991)

Arguably one of the best film based off television shows, the dark and creepy will make you laugh hysterically especially from anything Wednesday Addams says in the film.

11. The Conjuring 2 (2016)

The second film in the Conjuring universe directed and produced by James Wan delivers nonstop terrifying jump scenes featuring a demon nun will definitely leave you wanting to sleep with the lights on.

12. Sinister (2012)

One of the most terrifying horror movies on this list, a true-crime writer (played by Ethan Hawke) discovers a box of super 8 home movies that show the past murders that happened in his home. Not only will this film scare the living daylights out of you, but it will leave you skeptical of whatever happened before you lived in your house.

13. The Babadook (2014)

This Australian film is visually scary because of the presence of the Babadook as well as psychologically thrilling. If you're looking for a film that will make you jump and scary monsters you won’t find any here. The Babadook is a movie that taps into the basal emotion of fear. It portrays the truly terrifying things in life - grief, loneliness, and despair.

14. Orphan (2009)

Dark, edgy, twisted, effective, clever, intense, and blackly comic - one of the best "evil child" films ever made. Isabelle Fuhrman gives a terrifying, chilling performance that is worthy of praise.

15. Lights Out (2016)

Another horror film produced by James Wan that has amazing cinematography, dark scenes, and intense sound effects. Some say if you watch this movie with your childhood fears, you will really enjoy this movie. It's full of scares and if you put attention to them, they are the kind of scares that you really fear when you are a kid. Another film that will make you sleep with the lights on.

16. Don’t Breathe (2016)

An incredibly intense thriller that many did not expect to be superb, Don't Breathe is purely cinematic, relying less on dialogue and more on visual storytelling and sound to drive the film. The cinematography is amazing as well as the creative sound design.

17. Zombieland (2009)

Zombieland is not only thrilling, but it’s also hilarious. A group of four have to stick together in order to stay safe in zombie-filled America and encounter some surprising stops (including meeting Bill Murray) along the way.

18. The Hills Have Eyes (2006)

Let me just start out by saying that compared to today's standards and conventions, Craven's classic "The Hills Have Eyes" seems almost mild when compared to director Alexandre Aja's remake. Better acting, better visual effects, better make-up, better story presentation, and much, much more gore.

19. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

Both a Halloween and Christmas movie, The Nightmare Before Christmas is definitely one of writer Tim Burton’s best works of his career and the character Jack Skellington’s performance made this animated feature into a masterpiece.

20. Scary Movie (2000)

This spoof of the iconic Scream movies will make you laugh so hard you’ll cry. The name is also ironic with the movie actually being a comedy. If you liked Scream, then you’ll definitely adore this Wayans film.

21. Monsters vs. Aliens (2009)

Not only was this animated feature hilarious, but it includes some catchy dialogue. An underlying plot exists in this movie of Susan growing not just in size but in confidence after being hit by a meteorite on her wedding day. B.O.B., an indestructible, brainless, gelatinous science experiment gone wrong was the funniest character in this animated feature.

22. You’re Next (2011)

The set up is standard, a big old country house in the woods, a whole bunch of likable and dislikable people, and of course some outside assailants about to unleash hell on everyone in the house. Refreshingly this is not a roll call of pretty teenagers being stalked and slashed, because once family members start getting attacked there's a genuine sense of grief and regret coursing through those yet to be attacked.

23. Twitches (2005)

This Disney Channel original movie gives us another reason to love the Mowry twins. Twitches (or twin witches) offer viewers a good laugh as well as Halloween spirit.

24. Night of the Living Dead (1968)

This is classic. This is one of the best apocalypse films ever. This film, directed by Greg A. Romero, was made in 1968 while civil rights tensions were high, and the most "in control" character in the whole movie is a black man (not to be too political). If you can get past a couple of cheesy supporting performances, this is one of the best horror films ever.

25. Day of the Dead (1985)

Another Greg A. Romero horror film, Day of the Dead received a lot of negative press upon its release in 1985 - people picked apart unsavory characters, over-acting from a no-name cast, and outlandishly gory special effects. Day of the Dead obviously isn't a perfect movie, but deserves a fitting conclusion as one of the most daring movies in the horror genre.

26. Poltergeist (1982)

A Steven Spielberg classic and one of my favorite movies, Poltergeist is both terrifying and emotional and will definitely leave you in tears as you see how the Freeling family cope with the “kidnapping” of their youngest daughter, Carol Anne.

27. The Amityville Horror (2005)

Many say that when it comes to remaking old movies, the original is better than the remake. That’s not the case for the Amityville Horror. This version not only offers some graphic but cool visual effects, but it also features shirtless Ryan Reynolds.

28. Rosemary’s Baby (1968)

The acting is fantastic. The Dakota Apartments, located west of Central Park, is the perfect setting for the demonic events; all that rich Gothic detail in the heart of Manhattan provides the perfect atmosphere, serving as a dark fairy-tale world of its own within the modern setting. Director Roman Polanski knows this and utilizes it brilliantly. Sadly the Dakota Apartment would later be the site of the 1980 murder of former Beatle John Lennon.

29. The Evil Dead (1981)

The Evil Dead is a miracle. It was made on a rock-bottom budget yet it is scarier than any Hollywood movie that is made for 20 million could ever hope to be. If you want to truly experience a frightening experience, watch this film, it knows what it wants to say. And it knows how to make you afraid. So be afraid. Be very afraid. You may never look at the forest the same again.

30. Twitches Too (2007)

The sequel to Twitches, Twitches Too delivers more hilarious dialogue and more of the Mowry twins.

31. Scary Godmother: The Revenge of Jimmy (2005)

Volume two to Scary Godmother: Halloween Spooktacular offers more funny monsters, vampire, and talking skeletons that will surely make you more and more excited for Halloween this year.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
