We all do it. We cheers champagne or sparkling cider at midnight, we kiss at midnight or we sit on the couch eating Chinese food and drinking rosé. The ball drops and it’s suddenly a new year. A full circle around the sun, and a whole other circle in front of us, waiting for us to seize it. The dawn of the new year is the sun’s way of saying, “Impress me."
So we make resolutions. To workout, to eat better, to call our grandparents more, to save money. And they all tend to be forgotten by February 1st. And before you know it, you’re around the sun once again, ending up right back where you started.
The best way to start a new year is to make a realistic resolution. Something that will keep you on your toes, make you better, and make you stronger. Choose something attainable, but also something that betters you. Choose something that at your New Year's Eve 2018 party, you can say to the sun, “Joke’s on you.”
Here are 24 simple New Year's resolutions to make your 2018 more fulfilling:
1. Put your phone in your glovebox.
2. Say you're sorry and mean it.
3. Take at least one bubble bath a week.
4. Listen more.
5. Read more books.
6. Sit in more cafes.
7. Organize your closet.
8. Donate your old clothes or anything you don’t need. Lose weight—in the sense of letting go of anything that weighs your heart down.
9. Forgive. You’ll be a lot lighter.
10. Mend a strained or broken relationship.
11. Learn how to play guitar.
12. Plan a trip with your best friend.
13. Learn to knit.
14. Drink more tea.
15. Do more yoga.
16. Get excited. About everything.
17. Throw a party, just because.
18. Write everything down.
19. Dress up more.
20. Hike a mountain.
21. Wear more pearls, but less makeup.
22. Keep a journal/diary.
23. Run a 10k.
24. Eat less meat.
While these are all different, simple resolutions, they all share a common theme that many forget is the most, and frankly, only important resolution to have. The most important resolution is to do more of what makes you happy.
Make your goal of 2018 simple: be happy.
