2014 Forrest Hills Drive: A Timeline of J. Cole's Life

Lately everyone has been shitting on J. Cole for KOD. I agree, the beats were weaker, and the lyrics were dumbed down so highschoolers have somebody to look up to in rap besides Lil' Pump. So Please take a second to read why 2014 Forrest Hills Drive is genius and why you need to get off Cole's dick

1. Intro - a simple track simply stating the dream of J. Cole wants in his life, to be free of pain from pills and drugs and to be able to look back at his life and say "Look how far I came, Look how far I done came" and be proud of his accomplishments

2. January 28th - This is Cole's birthdIay. Literally the birth of his journey. This is a self pride track saying he's back and you can't touch him, not because he's better than you but because he's his own person. He focuses on how the fans treat him and how tear and pull and how he needs to still stick to himself. Then he ends the track with a complimentary call out to Drake and Kendrick saying they can't touch him. He's the god, his own god. Ending the verse with January 28th

3. Wet Dreamz - This is a classic track about cole losing his virginity. I'm gonna take a guess and say this was early high school. It's about his fears of his performance for his first time because he doesn't want the girl to know he's a virgin. So he spends all this time prepping. Then ends the track perfectly adding in the girls line "I want to get something of my mental, I can tell your a pro, but baby, be gentle, cause..." then leads to the chorus line,"'Cause i ain't done this before." The song is showing how equally scared boys and girls with their first time and intimacy in general. But both put on a front like they've done this before, but it's all a bluff.

4. '03 Adolescence - being in 2003. Cole would have been 18 or so, about to go to college. The song is about his relationship with his closest friend who sells weed to make ends meet. In the song he asks his friend how to get in the business 'cause he wants to make dough to. Then his friend fires back that he's trapped, Cole is the one with the real oppurtunity. Cole is realizing the trap the drug game that only leads to bigger weight and higher criminal charges.

5. A Tale of Two Cities - This would have been when cole moved to New York for college. He's speculating both sides of the home he came from and the environment he is in now and the mass differences between them. He's realizing how dangerous the city is, yet at the same time he likes it. He's molding into a new home.

6. Fire Squad - This is a relatively complex track. This would have been when he first blew up and feeling cocky. He begins the verse calling shit on a of people. Mainly alpha talk. He calls out the grammy's for picking white artists and brings up big names like Ice-T that he's comparing himself to. But then he ends the track with a monologue about how we are all own kings and anyone who says he has authority over us is only insecure with his own identity needing cling on to his power. Then he ends with saying when gets the crown he's going to destroy it because it has no meaning to him because he is own king and wants his fans to believe that in himself

7. St. Tropez - This would have been after his initial blow up looking at his position. The beat is relaxing and soothing, but the lyrics are rather depressing. "lately it's been hard for me to smile, if you won't take me in your home" he talking to audience, fans, friends, etc. speculating his self identity at the moment where he has this wealth and luxury, but still doesn't have a sense of home and unity.

8. G.O.M.D. (Get off my dick) - its a complete switch in tone compared to st. tropez. in st. tropez he's depressed because he still doesn't have the sense that he fits in anywhere. on g.o.m.d he go the complete opposite direction, saying he doesn't care if he doesn't fit in with these certain cliques and telling them to shut the fuck up because he's not interested anymore. He has his own shine now. Total Big Dick Energy type of track. He also ends it speculating his position as a black celebrity, pointing out the caricatures prior black celebrities have to fit to succeed. He saying he's off that shit, whatever he is he's the best at it, wherever he is he the best person there. All this sounds egotistic, but throughout the album coles makes it clear this is how EVERYONE should see themselves, but still recognizing and respecting the god in everyone.

9. No Role Modelz - This is a track as he keeps blowing up about how getting laid by all these amazing models.Women gorgeous enough to call his girlfriend and end the relationship right after having sex with them. But he switches the tone and realizes these women are only into him because he's blowing up. If he was still Cole from 2014 forrest hills drive, they wouldn't give him the time of day. And while this could be a track for feminism for women to not be into a guy for his wealth and instead their individuality, but he focuses on the male's aspect to pay attention to the real women who want a deep connection, who aren't sleeping for free merchandise and status, but a woman that love him for his heart.

10. Hello - So now that cole realizes how shallow hollywood women are he wants to go back and find the women in his life that really meant something to him. But most of the good ones are already married. It's a sad track where he remember all the intimate moments he had with his past relationships and how certain he was they would end up together. But at the same time, he can't wait around, he can't look back anymore because that's depression and has to look forward for someone new in his life.

11. Apparently - This is a mom track. Almost every great rapper has a track entitled to mother as they should. It's about all the inspiration and motivation his mother gave him. He also regrets the times he was having fun in college while his mother was struggling financially at home and ends having her home foreclosed (Cole makes it up by buying it back for her) But the main gist is she is the seed in his life that helped him find love in himself. Without her motivation and teachings, he wouldn't be who he is today. and after all his selfishness he realizes what his mother has given him and throughout all the unreturned blessings she gave, saying still "Apparently, you believe in me." After the monster he sees himself that his mother probably saw she still see the light in him and believes he can do great things.

12. Love Yourz- This I consider the last track of the album. He's circling back to "intro" focusing again on self love. But the irony he plays with is impeccable. Like how he says in "Intro" "Look how far I came, Look how I done came." Yet in Love Yourz he says "good news is your came a far way. Bad news is you went the wrong way" So again he speculating his position as a celebrity. He's made so far he's at the edge now, and he's scared of becoming superficial and losing touch with himself, mentioning the worthlessness of money without family. He ends the track by saying "no such thing as a life that's better than your's" sort of saying, "I'm scared, but at the end of the day follow your hear be true to yourself. Because only when you play yourself at your very best can you ever really be content

13. Note to Self - I feel like should have been a bonus track. He starts out the track by saying none of this really matters, we all die. It may seem depressing, but more me atleast, it gives sense of content and complete harmony. Saying the only thing we need more of is something that old as forever: Love. Then he literally switches the track, literally saying this is the roll credits cracking jokes about having fake conversations with celebrities he's never met like Jonah Hill. Then he gives a seemingly endless amount of credit to all the people who helped him in his life. He's looking back and appreciating everything people did for him. It a track about a "note to self" that he couldn't have done this alone. Almost an ego death

If you took the time to read all of this thank you. I spent a lot of time, since I first heard the album articulating why this is such a great album. Every song starts off like the beginning of a cinematic scene in a movie. He's literally playing a moving based on his life through music. Cole is also a genius with beat sound and lyric context, like how st. tropez sounds comforting but in the lyrics he's lost. Or how Hello has the same happy tone, but the lyrics are cole's daunting fears that the woman for him has already been swept away. A lot of duality in his tracks.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
