When I did my internship at Walt Disney World, I really didn't know what to expect. All I really knew at the beginning was that I was going to be placed on some attraction in one of the four theme parks. Little did I know that I was about to hit the jackpot.
Since I was about seven years old, my favorite ride down in Disney World has been the Rock 'n' Roller Coaster at Hollywood Studios. I am a huge roller coaster fanatic and loved the fact that it was a looping coaster at my favorite vacation destination.
When I actually went down to Florida to register for the internship, I found out that I was working at Hollywood Studios... on Sunset Boulevard. Now if you have been to Disney World, Sunset Boulevard is home to the two biggest thrill rides on the entire property: Tower of Terror and Rock 'n' Roller Coaster. So, when I found out I was going to be working at this location, and then found out that I was going to be working on the roller coaster my whole program, I almost passed out from excitement
I had one week of training. I had to be at the coaster at 6:30 a.m. every morning for the training. I honestly didn't mind it, because I had to walk through an empty Hollywood studios to get to the coaster. So my view every morning was amazing, to say the least.
The best part about working on the coaster was seeing how everything worked. Being a coaster junkie, I loved learning about the different sensors, brakes, launch systems and trains and learning about the track itself. One of my favorite jobs was being in the coaster control room, launching each train through the ride, and making sure the whole roller coaster was operating properly. I loved seeing all the priceless reactions of the guests when I would hit the button that would launch them at 60 mph in three seconds.
Another fun part about my job at the coaster was the fact that I rode it pretty much every night after we closed for the day. This was actually a legitimate part of our closing procedures, so the fact that it was part of my job to ride the coaster was amazing.
I was able to ride it with the lights on and with no lights at all. I rode it with the music and without the music. I even rode it in pitch darkness, with no clue as to when we were going to be launched! In my six months of working on the coaster, I rode it over 140 times. Each time was just as much fun as the first time.
I loved my job on the coaster. I was so thankful that I was randomly picked to be part of the coaster family! My co-workers and bosses on that ride were some of the best people I ever worked with. I chose not to do another Disney College program, just because I don't think the first experience could be topped. I mean, working on my favorite ride was more than enough magic for me!
