The 17 Most Important Things I Learned In 2017

As the year winds down, I've realized how wild 2017 was. Although it was definitely not the perfect year, it was one of the most important years of my life, which means that I learned a lot of from it. Here are 17 of the most pivotal life lessons I learned this year:

1. Ice Cream Can Fix Mostly Everything

Whether it's a messy fight or a bad test grade, ice cream is extremely independent and possibly every college student's savior. Even though there are a lot of things wrong with my dining hall, having access to over 10 flavors of ice cream on any given day is one of the best things that's ever happened to me.

2. Your Roommate Can Make or Break Your College Experience

Perhaps one of the biggest blessings I've had this year that I could never take for granted is having one of best roommates in the world. Having a roommate who you are compatible with means there will never be a dull moment when you two are together. I'm so lucky to live with a person who I can completely trust and share anything and everything with.

3. When One Door Closes, Two More Open

This goes for anything - whether it be college decisions, not getting an executive position in a club or not being able to snipe a course during add/drop week. There are endless amount of possibilities in life, so don't get discouraged when one of them does not work out.

4. Disney Is The Most Magical Place in the World

No explanation needed for this one.

5. College Will Show You Who Your True Friends Are

High school is like a bubble and it's easy to be friends with almost everybody but once you leave for college, the people who choose to stay in touch with you are the ones who are worth everything. They are the ones who will never fail to put a smile on your face and the ones who are worth keeping forever.

6. No Grade Is As Important As Your Health

College is one of the first times I've lost sleep over studying for exams and pushed myself to work harder to get the A, but I've learned that your health should always be your priority and no grade could be nearly as important as it.

7. Treat Yourself

You honestly deserve it, even if you don't think you do.

8. Your Mom Really Knows Best

She somehow always has the right answer for everything.

9. Injustice Is Real and it's our Job to Fix It

I have been privileged enough to be sheltered for most of my life, unaware of the severity of the inequalities all types of people in the world face. College has opened up my eyes to how we are responsible for the social constructions which we abide to and the type of world that we live in.

10. Life is Too Short to get Caught Up in the Little Things

Learn from it and let it go.

11. Don't Try to Get Rid of All of your Meal Swipes the Last Week Of The Semester

There's too many and unfortunately, it just won't work.

12. There's No Place Like Home

This hits you really hard when you realize how excited you are to go home and sleep in your own bed after finishing a semester of college.

13. Never Make a Decision Out of Anger

You'll 100% regret it in the future.

14. Trust Your Instincts

You can't go wrong if you stick to your values and you listen to your heart.

15. Choose Your Classes Based on Your Professor, Not the Subject

Take Rate My Professor very seriously.

16. Cuffing Season Is Real

Sometimes it's a little too real.

17. Everything Happens For A Reason

This should be your new life motto.

I can't wait to see what 2018 holds in store and I hope it involves a lot more ice cream and laughs.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
