She has been there since day one, literally. She has been looking out for your best interests, even when you tell mom she did something when it was really you. She has taken the blame for all the little things to make sure you wouldn’t cry. And when you did get into trouble, she was always right there to make you feel better.
1. She is the reason why you haven’t made terrible mistakes.
An older sister is there to show you what to do and what not to do. Making sure you don’t do something that she knows would piss mom and dad off.
2. She is always just a call away.
You can literally call her for anything, whether it be for medicine, someone to talk to when you’re having a bad day or as a person to drive you home from a party when you’re too drunk to walk home.
3. She let you borrow clothes when you clearly had no taste of your own.
Let’s be honest, at the age of 14, you didn’t really have the best taste in clothes. She was always there to stop you before you left for school and to tell you to change out of that god awful shirt with whatever brand logo going across the chest.
4. You never have to worry about her judging you.
Sisters are the best people because you know she would never judge you (too harshly) for the stupid mistakes you have made. Chances are, she did the same exact thing, maybe even worse.
5. She will do silly things with you.
This may include muting the TV and making up what the other people are saying to each other, making fun of (but not in a mean way) your mom when she can’t pronounce the word insurance correctly (we love you mom).
6. She is ready to pounce on the person who made you cry.
Remember that time in middle school when one of the popular girls was bullying you? Or that time when the boy you liked said that you had cooties and told you to go away? Your older sister was always ready to beat that boy up or go stand up for you when that popular girl made you cry.
7. She will always be honest with you, even if the truth hurts.
She will always be straight up with you, even when you don’t want to hear the god awful truth. She will tell you when you’re being extremely irrational and tell you when those pants make your butt look big. However, she only does this because she cares.
8. She is always there to take selfies.
What is the point of hanging out if there is no photo evidence? She may not always be picture ready but for you, she will always take a selfie with you. And you might even sneak in an ugly Snapchat picture or video of her because that’s just what you do.
9. Her friends are your friends.
And vice versa. I will never forget her friends always asking me how I am and sometimes even letting me hangout with them. They easily became family and you always know that they will be there for you if you have a question. And sometimes, your sister thought your friends were cool and would hang out with “the kids”.
10. She introduced you to the music you listen to.
She is the one to thank for your taste in music. Whenever she was driving you places before you could even drive, it was always her music. When you asked to put on the Disney channel station on the radio, she would say “No way.” You slowly but surely started to like the music she liked. I can thank you, Mallory, for turning me on to country music.
11. She gives the best advice.
Whether it be about boys or friends. She will always back you up but also will tell you how it is from another point of view. She would never steer you wrong. And nine times out of 10, she is the person you rely on most when it comes to giving you the best advice. Because how would mom and dad know what it’s like to be a teenager? That was like a million years ago for them!
12. She will love you unconditionally.
Thank you so much for always being there for me. I don't know what I would do without you by my side. You truly are one of my best friends in life. We will always be close even when you are the next room over or a million miles away.
