It’s 10 o’clock on a Sunday morning. I roll out of bed, wipe the sleep from my eyes and drag myself into the kitchen where I can hear my mom pitter-patter around the table and take a seat in front of the TV, sighing as she searches for something to watch. She puts it on HGTV, and I instantly take a seat at the table with her after fixing myself a cup of coffee. We sit there for minutes in silence, captivated by the renovations taking place on "Property Brothers." Unfazed by the ring of the phone, by a knock on the front door, by the soft mews of a kitten at our feet. We are more than engrossed, more than distracted — we are addicted. The first step of recovery is admitting. What follows are my 12 confessions of being an HGTV addict.
1. I choose to watch HGTV over any other network.
2. I get emotionally involved with the homebuyers and their decisions on the shows.
3. I hope someday I will run into an HGTV star while walking the aisles of the local Home Depot or Lowes.
4. I spend entirely too much time exploring the home sections of Target, Kohl's and Walmart.
5. I rearranged my bedroom every other weekend throughout my childhood by myself.
6. I have been known to thrift various odds and ends because I think somehow I can make them fit somewhere in the apartment.
7. I save everything from bits of fabric to the ribbon used to hold blankets together because I think I can use it to reupholster or revamp something.
8. I designed my bedroom at 13, and then redesigned it at 16.
9. I think that the "Property Brothers" are gods.
10. I strive to have a relationship like Chip and Joanna Gaines.
11. I dream someday I will have enough money to get a vacation home like the ones shown on House Hunters International and House Hunters on Vacation.
12. I hate that I don’t have cable at my apartment because I can’t watch HGTV whenever I please.
