Between the sarcastic and quick-witted comments to the deep life lessons shared by Lorelai and Rory, “Gilmore Girls” is not only extremely relatable, but teaches life lessons that I have carried with me since I have finished watching the show and have since applied to my own life. Because of the special place that the two Gilmore Girls hold in my heart, here are 10 life lessons that these two have taught me about my own life:

1. All you need are a few good friends in life

Rory lived a happy life with just a few good friends by her side. She always could rely on Lane to be there for her when she needed to vent about her life and have a shoulder to cry on. And while Paris brought out Rory’s competitive side, she was always nothing but an amazing friend to Rory and was there for her when she just needed some words of encouragement or motivation to do something.

2. Too much coffee isn’t a thing

Lorelai and Rory taught me that one cup of coffee is simply not enough to get yourself through the day. And while I am not a regular at Luke’s Diner, Starbucks will have to do for now.

3. You don’t have to have your entire life planned out

While Rory had plans to attend Harvard her entire life and become a famous journalist, her life didn’t turn out exactly how she imagined it to. And while she took a few detours throughout her life and she dealt with many trials and errors before she figured out what she wanted for herself in the future, it all eventually led her to the right place in her life. After watching Rory grow up and go through everything she did in life, I realized that it’s okay if I don’t know exactly what I want to do with my life just yet because I do have time. I have time to explore and enjoy my life before I settle down into doing one thing. I haven’t had enough successes and I haven’t experienced enough failures to know what path I’m supposed to be taking but, at the end of the day, I know it’ll all fall into place.

4. Always be yourself no matter what

Something that Lorelai and Rory always lived their life by was never caring about what other people thought of them. They were happy in their own skin and they were happy with the lives they were living and never let negativity get in the way of what they wanted to achieve in life

5. Being independent and putting yourself out there opens a lot of doors

Rory was a go-getter in everything she did in life. She worked so incredibly hard on every story and assignment she had as a writer for her high school newspaper, and she worked even harder at Yale where she worked her way up to becoming the Editor-in-Chief of the Yale Daily News. Overall, Rory grew up really fast and, because of that, she learned how to be independent in all she did.

6. You should live to eat and not eat to live

Whether it was eating a short stack of pancakes or scrambled eggs and bacon at Luke’s, or buying all the candy and chips from Doose’s market for a girl’s night in, Lorelai and Rory were never worried about what they were eating; instead, they were worrying about where to get more food from. They were always so laid back about everything and they were never worried about their weight or counting calories.

7. Find yourself a Luke

While it took Lorelai forever to realize Luke was really the right one for her, at the end of the day, she ended up with the right person and that’s all that really matters. Luke was Lorelai’s person, her best friend, and her confidant. She told him and trusted him with everything and, evidently, that led to their healthy relationship. The bottom line is, if you find a Luke in life, you’re definitely doing something right.

8. Your parents are always there for you even if you don’t always realize it

Lorelai went back and forth, for years, fighting with her parents over almost everything. After she got pregnant with Rory, her life completely turned upside down in regard to her relationship with her parents. While it wasn’t always easy for Lorelai to admit it, Emily and Richard always were looking out for her best interest and wanted to help in raising Rory to give her the best life. Lorelai was so lucky to have such amazing and supportive parents and it helped me to appreciate mine that much more.

9. Being an overachiever pays off

Rory worked so hard all throughout high school and college in order to get almost everything she wanted in life. If she set her mind to something and worked hard at it, she most likely would see the results she wanted. This was exactly the mentality that I had as I went through high school as I believed that if you worked hard for what you wanted, good things would happen in your life.

10. Your mom’s advice is always the best advice

At the end of the day, no matter if we’re all willing to admit it all the time or not, the advice you get from your mom is some of the best and most thoughtful advice you will ever get. For Rory, the advice she got from Lorelai always guided her in the right direction whenever she was lost, confused, or just simply needed her mom by her side.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
