I can't begin to tell you how many times I've heard my parents tell me that they "weren't born yesterday." But thats all good and true but what if they were born yesterday? What would their childhood be like in today's day and age? What are the most shocking & drastic differences between growing up in the 80's vs growing up in the 2000's

1. Internet

The comparison here is simple. It didn't exist at least not in the form that we know today. The internet began its real journey began in 1983 but did't take on its more recognizable form until 1990.

2. Clothing style

Aside from the fact that we attend parties all year round with a distinctive 80's theme the fashion derived from this time period was truly iconic. Bright colors and flashy pants were a stable to this particular decade.

3. Phones

You mean bricks? Where phones did exist at this point, just like the internet it wasn't nearly anything close to what we know them to be today. The accessibility of cell phones today is FAR greater than the brick like cellular phone of the 80's.

4. Movies

The days of the drive in movies & boy do we miss them. If you've ever seen the movies like The Goonies, Dirty Dancing, Pretty in Pink, Top Gun, Princess Bride, And The Breakfast Club then I have no more explaining to do. The 80s hold so many of our favorite classic films that its hard not to miss the simple days. Makes you wonder what the classics of our generation will be.... Mean girls?

5. Video Games

Not only have gaming consoles become more plentiful but damn have they also gotten so complex! The simplicity of handheld consoles has remained the same in terms of the over all basic buttons but the internal complexity has skyrocketed!

6. THE HAIR

No explanation can do those perms justice. Besides the clothes, 80s hair styles were arguably the most iconic feature from the era.

7. Smoking Cigarettes

The simple way to envision how much smoking cigarettes has changed is with the simple realization that in 1980 if you saw a person smoking in a public building or area no one would think anything was unusual. If you saw someone doing the same in 2017 you would probably think that person was inconsiderate, harming themselves, or that they were being gross by doing so.

8. Socializing

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, or IMessage. All of these things have one thing in common, they're all social media websites or apps. It's extremely rare to find someone these days who doesn't at least have a Facebook if you're between the ages of 13 and 50. With the coming of computers and the internet socialization took on a very new persona: social media. This changed things for people all across the globe. Making it so that you can meet someone from a whole other continent without every seeing them person to person.

9. Transportation

Mass transit as well as personal vehicles have changed more in style and accessibility in the past 30 years than anything else. Now where it was accessible in the 80's it wasn't always pretty!

10. Families

Looking at the evolution of the "normal" American family is something that, over the past 30 has taken on a more blended quality than anything else. What once was seen as a mother, father, brother, sister, and a dog is now something that cannot necessarily be specified.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
