Being in theater has taught me many things and has definitely shaped my personality. Being a theater kid, growing up, and now going to school for theater and music can sometimes consume your life. These are things that I have found very true if you are a theater major.
1. You don't have a social life.
Between school, rehearsals, and holding down a job, that leaves very little - if any - time for hanging out with friends or having any relationships.
2. You can talk yourself out of any situation
You can literally bulls*** your way through any situation. After all, isn’t that what improv is all about?
3. You don't sleep
What is sleep? You pull 20 hour days you're lucky if you can average four hours of sleep a night with everything going on in life.
4. There is no such thing as personal space
With backstage changing, you're not afraid to just throw your top off in front of anyone back there. You have not even half a page to change your whole outfit! It's called a "quick change" for a reason.
5. Randomly bursting out in song is completely normal
You sing all the time - in class, rehearsal, in the car, the shower. Why not start singing in the middle of the mall? I mean hey, you have the floor; performing in front of strangers should be a breeze.
6. When somebody says that a musical movie is amazing it makes you cringe
When people say that Le Mis is a “great movie” you become infuriated! It is a musical! What do they think the movie was inspired by!?
7. You have a collection of makeup
You have your personal makeup that you use every day but you also have a stack of stage makeup. So what, you have eight different shades of foundations? You share with friends and maybe you're ridiculously sunburnt and need a dark shade, but you are always prepared.
8. Rehearsal usually takes precedence over homework
Class from 8-5 and then rehearsal from 6-10 and then you don't get home until 11. That means homework and studying
9. Free time is precious
When a class or practice is canceled and you get called off work, it's literally a miracle! You don't know what to do. You’re not used to free time. Do you nap? Do you hang out with friends? Catch up on homework and studying? Or do you just catch up on a show you are watching on
10. You’re not afraid to talk to anyone
You can make friends everywhere. You're not afraid to put yourself out there.
