10 Signs You Did Marching Band In High School (And Likely Nothing Else)

"You may take the field for competition" still gives you chills.

We all had a bond that nobody outside of band could understand and we all were split into sections only to combine and make one great band, working day in and day out. Here are 10 signs you did marching band in high school.

1. You still know (and can sing) all of your previous shows, no matter how long ago you last performed them.

You remember the solo that was in movement 3 and the horn entrance in movement 4 and you can hum all of it with little to no problem.

2. Water breaks weren't taken as a joke.

It was usually well over 90 degrees outside and it was always a race to the sidelines to get water. Anyone watching us run to get water would think something was chasing us.

3. You can't help but walk in step with everyone.

It's just a natural habit because you were pretty much just trained to do this and it'll probably never change.

4. The (very) loud metronome that sat in the back of the field is forever stuck in your mind.

You also probably get a headache whenever you even think about how loud it was. Thanks, Dr. Beat.

5. Your tan lines are now a part of you.

You have sock tan lines, a farmer's tan, and sometimes even a tan on your face from your sunglasses. There's no getting rid of them, so embrace how awkward they are.

6. "One more time" never meant one more time.

One more time meant about 4 more times, only if you hit all of your dots at the right time and didn't miss an entrance.

7. You'll never not roll your eyes when you mention you're in band and someone says, "This one time at band camp...".

That's enough of that. Band camp is nothing like that, I can assure you.

8. You're early to everything.

As the saying goes, to be early is on time, to be on time is late, and to be late is...well, let's never find out.

9. Football season means marching band season.

We spend months in the exhausting heat for hours upon hours practicing on the field, learning our drill, and playing the same movement over and over again. It's our time to shine.

10. You always said "I can't, I have band" to anyone who asked if you wanted to hang out.

Friday night games, Saturday competitions, and practices throughout the week left you with 0 room to do anything non-band related.

I was always told that the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Little did I know, those steps would be 8 to 5.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
