Food can be a strange thing. It can induce feelings of happiness (I'm looking at you pizza), or help you through something horrible (chocolate and a break up). The point is, food is pretty miraculous. However, there are a lot of things about food you need to know. Here's 10 things you didn't know about food, but need to.
1. Cheese isn't naturally orange.
Yep. Your cheddar cheese is in fact, not naturally that color.
2. Humans are the only mammals that drink milk after infancy.
AND IT'S NOT OUR MILK. I won't go on a dairy rant right now, but in my opinion that's gross.
3. Avocados are a fruit.
They are. Don't @ me.
4. One of the most popular pizza toppings in Brazil is peas.
I don't know either. But if I have to know this, so do you.
5. Strawberries are not a berry, but bananas are.
The definition of a berry is: a fleshy fruit produced from a single ovary. Okay, so what does that mean? It means that the surrounding flesh around the seed doesn't come from the fruit's ovaries, but from the receptacle in which the ovaries are found. So in short, the seeds in a strawberry, raspberry, or blackberry, do not qualify it as a berry. Weird. ALSO, fruits like cherries and peaches are not berries.
6. Honey enters your blood stream in less than 20 minutes.
That's because it's already been digested by the bees. Gross.
7. Pearls dissolve in vinegar.
This one isn't really "food" I guess, but vinegar is in a lot of foods we eat. The acetic acid in the vinegar reacts with the calcium carbonate in the pearl, and dissolves it.
8. Yams and Sweet potatoes aren't the same thing.
In all honesty, I didn't know they weren't either. To also be fair, I've never had a yam, and I don't like sweet potatoes. So I suppose I never would have known.
9. Cranberries bounce when ripe.
I wouldn't recommend throwing it at a wall like a bouncy ball, but still a fun fact nonetheless.
10. Nazi Germany tried to assassinate Winston Churchill by exploding a chocolate bar.
Again, not really a food fact, so maybe more of a fact. Nazi Germany obviously weren't very good at assassinations. It didn't work, but they tried. So chocolate COULD potentially be used to kill someone.
