Kacey Musgraves is mysterious, audacious, and, above all else, beautifully lyrical. The songs she writes tell a clear story. Whether it be of love, heartbreak, small towns, or weed, Kacey Musgraves always finds a way to take her listeners on a lyrical journey. From start to finish, every line in a Kacey Musgraves song makes us feel either warm, fuzzy, or giddy (sometimes all three!).
There are certain lyrics, however, that stand our more than others. Here, listed below, are the top ten lyrics written by Kacey Musgraves:
"Looking through your eyes... Looks like paradise"
The title track from Album of the Year, Golden Hour, by Kacey Musgraves is a sweet love ballad that tells the story of someone rediscovering themselves through love. This line is beautifully written, and Kacey sings about how seeing the world through the eyes of her love puts a bright hue over everything. UGH- All. The. Feels.
"If you don't save yourself for marriage... you're a whore-able person."
This song is POWERFUL. It's a subtle anthem full of quoteable lines; however, it's the punny word "whore-able" that makes this line so memorable. "Follow Your Arrow" is a song about how you can't please everyone, and Kacey starts out by saying if you 'slip up' and have sex before marriage, it makes you a "horrible" person in the eyes of the church. We know this isn't true, but leave it to our girl Kacey Musgraves to make a really good joke about it.
"Even the holiest of holies slip up from time to time"
This song is so fun and a good reminder to stay the heck out of other people's business. The line, "Even the holiest of holies slip up from time to time" reminds listeners that nobody is perfect. What Kacey is telling us here is that we shouldn't sweat the small stuff. You messed up? No biggie, so did your "perfect" friend who is only hiding it.
"After the gold rush there ain't no reason to stay"
Have you ever had a relationship that you know isn't destined to work out? It's okay, we all have. The song "Space Cowboy" is all about leaving even when it's hard. How true is it that once the good is gone, there is truly no reason to stay? Kacey reminds us that it's okay to leave when things become toxic.
"Don't get you at all, but your apple don't fall too far from 'em"
Differing political views, weird and annoying habits, funny inside jokes, and, above all else, love- these all are the qualities of a good family. No matter how much your family gets on your ever-lasting nerve- hey, they're family. Kacey is singing about this here, as she reminds us all that at the end of the day, family is family.
"Hide your crazy and start acting like a lady"
Although this song isn't sung by Kacey Musgraves, she did write it- and we LOVE it nonetheless. When going through a tough breakup, it can sometimes be instinct to go a little crazy (Before He Cheats, anyone?). Kacey wrote this song about taming our wild side and handling the heartbreak like a "lady", whatever that means.
"If you're ever gonna find a four leaf clover, you gotta get a little dirt on your hands"
Isn't this just the truest statement you've ever read? Life gets hard, but sometimes we just have to get over it and stop wallowing in our own pity. Kacey wrote this line to remind us that in order to get past our more difficult days, we have to take control of our own destiny and make a change.
"And just like dust we settle in this town"
Growing up in a small town can be great, but sometimes it can leave a lot to be desired. "Merry Go Round" was Kacey's first single back in 2013 and she's writing about how boring life can seem if we assimilate into the traditions around us. Get out there and do something different, or else life can seem life can seem like nothing other than a boring, never ending merry go round.
"I'll still call my hometown home"
This is a song all about remembering where you come from. Kacey Musgraves has obviously had much success with her music and been all around the world (if you follow her Instagram, you'll see she loves Japan). No matter the success, no matter the fame, Kacey will always "call her hometown home." What a nice reminder this is to stay true to who you are and remember where you came from and who got you to where you are.
"When our ship comes in, we'll just sail away"
"Blowin' Smoke" is a song that tells us to quit while we're ahead- only we never get ahead. Isn't that just like life? Trying to get ahead and never being able to? But one day, our ships will (finally) come in and we will "sail away-ay-ay."
