Often times I find myself getting bored with mainstream artists. I've started to discover more new artists that have a relatively new sound. On the radio, we can tend to hear the same artists/songs over and over. With discovering new artists, it keeps my playlist interesting, enjoyable, but most importantly, exciting. Looking for new music? Here are 10 artists that you need to know.

1. H.E.R.

This artist keeps her identity anonymous, which allows the listener to focus solely on her voice. She is a contemporary R&B/Soul artist who released a seven-track E.P. (that is self-titled) as well as an eight-track E.P. that is self-titled as well. Recently, she just announced an extension of her second E.P. called "The B Sides."


2. Jhene Aiko

Jhene is an R&B/Soul Artist who has released a plethora of projects. She recently released an album titled "Trip" which takes the listener along on her own emotional journey. This album literally has a song for everything, which makes them relatable.


3. Amine

Amine is a Hip Hop/Rap artist whose music defies the mainstream stylistically. His Recent Project "Good For You" is a carefree, anecdotal, and light-hearted album, that doesn't shy away from serious issues.


4. Kehlani

Kehlani is a contemporary R&B/Soul artist who as a number of projects released. Her recent full-length project being "SweetSexySavage," which highlights the soul-searching she has done in her life. This album is not only refreshing but light-hearted.

5. Nao

Nao is an R&B/Soul Artist whose most recent project is "For All We Know." This is an album that highlights various relationships with those around her (friends, lovers, etc.) and herself. This album is able to describe emotions incredibly well. Nao has a particularly interesting sound, where she incorporates funk.

6. Keiynan Lonsdale

Keiynan is an actor (who currently plays Wally West on CW's "The Flash) who has recently released new music. Most of his Pop-oriented. His projects include Higher, Lay It On Me (in collaboration with Kasbo), Good Life, and Royal Blood (in collaboration with Louis Futon). His music is carefree, high-spirited, and energetic that has a dynamic that makes you want to dance.

7. Daniel Caesar

Daniel is an R&B/Soul Artist (with influences of pop and electronic) whose recent project is "Freudian." This album has a lot of influences (including gospel). His voice has a lot of emotional depth, making his vocals shine even more.


8. Chloe X Halle

Chloe and Halle are R&B/Soul artists who have an incredibly unique sound in music. They have a few projects released, where there most recent full-length E.P. being "Sugar Symphony." Their music draws from a number of influences such as Jazz, hip-hop, and pop.


9. Solange

Solange is an R&B/Soul Artist who is creative, empowering, and carefree. Her most recent project is titled "A Seat at the Table" but she has many projects under her belt. Her music is exhilarating, adventurous, and artistic.


10. Kali Uchis

Kali's music is influenced by many styles of music and artists. She is a pop-oriented singer whose recent single is "Nuestra Planeta (featuring Reykon)." The single has a lot of pop influences as well as R&B.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
