4 Reasons Why You Should Do Research as an Undergraduate

This is a tricky thing to keep track of for different majors. There are certain majors that are research intensive and thus, highly recommend (if not require) undergraduate students of that department to be involved in any research pertaining to that subject and their interests.

I would argue that for any major if they do provide research facilities for undergraduates, it is a very fulfilling experience to be a part of a research team of that field.

1. Mentorship.

Working with graduate students and professors in your field of interest allows you to gain a foot in with them and thus, form meaningful connections that will take you far beyond university. Also, those recommendation letters? Yup, that's what I'm talking about.

2. Enhancing your Resume.

Being part of something that you take time apart from your busy schedule to showcase your particular interests shows that you are truly passionate and eager to take that extra step when you want to. Moreover, it teaches you skills that you would not gain from the classroom and isn't that what this is all about?

3. Explore Career Fields.

We go into college and the major that we decide with an ideal view of what a person does in that field but I have realized that there is more to that one path (Investment Banking, I'm looking at you) that you have to make yourself go with. Research exposes you to all the different kinds of things graduate students and professors are doing in your field and taking that kind of information can guarantee finding something that you would actually want to do for the rest of your life in that field.

4. Contributing to your field.

Giphy

Research makes you realize that you don't need to get other fancy degrees to actually make a difference in the field of your interests. It's impressive to realize that the professors who teach you actually put out papers that revolutionize the field that they are a part of and you can be a part of that journey.

And there you have it! Go on your websites and actually see what your professors are up to and if it interests you, shoot them an email!

New England Summers Are The BEST Summers

Three years ago, I chose to attend college in Philadelphia, approximately 360 miles away from my small town in New Hampshire. I have learned many valuable lessons away from home, and have thoroughly enjoyed my time spent in Pennsylvania. One thing that my experience has taught me, however, is that it is absolutely impossible to beat a New England summer.

Yes, the math major is doing a math-related post. What are the odds? I'll have to calculate it later. Many people have probably learned about the Fibonacci sequence in their high school math classes. However, I thought I would just refresh everyone's memories and show how math can be beautiful and apply to physical things everywhere around us with stunning examples.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
