Gandhi once said, "Be the change you wish to see in the world." This quote is so beautiful, but has become this overplayed phrase that has lost it's meaning for most Americans. The quote means that we can be the change. However, once you hear something too much, the novelty of it is worn off.
The March for our Lives made Gandhi's quote a novelty again.
The students from Parkland really brought this quote to life. They are sparking a change to end gun violence, challenging politicians to do something, and representing every victim of a mass shooting. The Parkland students are the change that this country needs.
There were 17 school shootings within the first 45 days of 2018. 17 is way too many. There shouldn't have even been one. Schools are supposed to be a safe place. How did we let things get this far and not make a change?
Sandy Hook was 6 years ago and I remember exactly where I was when I got news that it happened. I was sitting at my favorite seafood restaurant with my mom and we mourned with them even though we weren't physically there. The government didn't listen to the parents and didn't listen to elementary school kids who died. This wasn't sad enough to make a change apparently.
The Parkland students are making the change we need to see in the world and they believe in their voice. They inspired enough people to come out and fight, that more people showed up to the march in Washington D.C. than Trump's inauguration.
For those of us who are students, we have a voice. We need to share it, talk about things that matter, and fight for something better because it's obvious that nothing is getting done.
The march is the first step to creating a change. Now we need to vote because the kids from mass shooting within the past 5 to 10 years are all voting age.
Just like Gandhi's quote, voting in America has lost it's meaning. We think our voice won't make the change and there isn't an issue worth fighting. But there is. Voting is the fore front of democracy, however too many times our voices been overridden by a government official who has more power. We shouldn't let this stand anymore.
If you haven't joined the March for our Lives, then you should because we are the generation to make a change. It's okay if we don't know every part of what that change looks like, but doing something about it is the first step enough. Powerful movement leaders didn't know where the movement was going to go, but they did it because it mattered.
The march has become so much more than just marching for gun violence. It takes on every issue of safety, race, and any injustice that is so prevalent in this country.
Join the march, tweet about it, buy the shirts, donate to the cause. Just do something besides pretending this doesn't affect you.
"Be the change you wish to see in the world."
