Most people would rather spend the extra few bucks to fly if it meant avoiding a 14-hour drive. However, driving to Colorado was worth biting the bullet and making the drive. No, it’s not the legalization of recreational marijuana that made Colorado worth it, but instead, it was the beauty and uniqueness that make it so special.
103,730 miles of Colorado are covered in mountains, and it is home to more mountains over 14,000 feet than any other state. The roads that lead into the mountains are like nature's roller coaster. Between the winding pavement and the high altitude, your jaw and stomach are sure to drop at the spectacular views. In particular, Loveland Pass carries an excitement that everyone should experience in their lifetime. Even views of the mountains are both beautiful and unique to the area.
Vail, Colorado is one of the largest ski resorts in the world with more than 5,200 acres of ski and snowboard terrain. People come from all over the world to ski and snowboard at this Rocky Mountain resort. If gliding down a black diamond isn't your cup of tea, there are many starter hills and ski and snowboard lessons to sharpen your skills.
Not only is Vail an ideal stop for snow lovers, but it also appeals to hikers in the summer. During my own visit, I had the most incredible breakfast food in Vail's very own Westside Cafe. Not only was the food fantastic, but a quick look out the window gives you the best view of the Rocky Mountains. Vail has a little bit of something for everyone. From the various shops, the fine dining, and beautiful sites, Vail adds charm to what makes Colorado so special.
Making the drive can be worth saving the extra money as well. When flying to Colorado, it is crucial to have your own mode of transportation. Whether that means borrowing a car from a friend or renting one from the airport, the only way you can really take in the beauty of Colorado is by driving into the Rockies and exploring the many trails and gondolas it has to offer.
Bonus: Mount Evans, located just 60 miles west of Denver, is the only mountain over 14,000 feet that carries a paved road all the way to the top. So, if climbing a mountain by foot isn't your thing, you can always drive up Mount Evans in the summer and catch some of the breathtaking views without losing your breath along the way.
Overall, Colorado is a great place and carries many exciting things that people need to experience at least once in their lifetime. The views are great, and you can only get them with the help of some mountains, which isn't a feature most states have.
