I don't remember when, why or how Meghan Trainor became famous, but I do know that one day she was a thing and that I know the words to most of her songs because they are ridiculously catchy. I have sung her songs loudly while driving an embarrassing number of times. More recently, though, I've discovered that most of her lyrics piss me off. Literally every single one of her songs sends a bad message to girls everywhere or is offensive. Usually, I just ignore dumb pop songs, but I don't want my younger sister, or any kids, growing up listening to these messages.
Don't believe me? Let's check out some songs from her album, "Title" (2014).
1. "All About That Bass".
Yeah, it's pretty clear, I ain't no size two
But I can shake it, shake it, like I'm supposed to do
Yeah, my mama she told me "don't worry about your size"
(Shoo wop wop, sha-ooh wop wop)
She says, "Boys like a little more booty to hold at night"
(That booty, uh, that booty booty)
You know I won't be no stick figure silicone Barbie doll
So if that what you're into, then go 'head and move along
I'm bringing booty back
Go 'head and tell them skinny bitches that
I don't know who told her she was "supposed to" shake it, but that seems pretty sexist. What's wrong with being naturally skinny? Some girls are just built that way, whether they like it or not. Just because skinny-shaming is rarely talked about doesn't mean it isn't a thing happening in our society. Is she implying that boys won't like girls who have a Barbie-like figure?
2. Title song.
You gotta treat me like a trophy, put me on the shelf
Or call me something else
If you want my love
You gotta do what it does
If you want these sweet like sugar Gucci lips
You gotta give it up
I have to admit, this one is pretty catchy and has minimally offensive lyrics. But, she did imply that women are objects by claiming that we're trophies that belong on a shelf. Relationships are supposed to be give and take, no one should be giving up anything.
3. "Dear Future Husband".
'Cause if you'll treat me right
I'll be the perfect wife
Buying groceries
Buy-buying what you need
If you wanna get that special lovin'
Tell me I'm beautiful each and every night
After every fight
Just apologize
And maybe then I'll let you try and rock my body right (right)
Even if I was wrong
[Laugh] You know I'm never wrong
Why disagree?
Why, why disagree?
This might be the winner for most offensive. I didn't even include all of the lines that pissed me off. The "perfect wife" does not have to buy groceries, this isn't the 1950's and sexism is not supposed to be a thing anymore. Also, she uses sex as a form of control in most of her songs. And, my favorite, she claims that she is never wrong, and that if you disagree with her she won't have sex with you. That angers me.
4. "Walkashame".
A little bit of rum in my tummy
Yum yum
I shook it up, and danced like a dummy
Dumb dumb
He kissed me and he called me his bae
Asked me to stay
How could I turn that away?
OK, first of all, it doesn't matter how much you've had to drink or what you've done, if you don't feel comfortable going somewhere, don't. She makes it seem like she owed this boy because he called her "bae" and was nice to her. Consent people, consent.
5. "Lips Are Movin".
And I'm a classy girl
I'm a hold it up
You full of something but it ain't love
And what we got is straight overdue
Go find somebody new
This song isn't particularly bad lyrically, but the message seems to be common in a majority of her songs: men are bad. In every song, the guy does something to piss her off, and then she writes about it. She's like a more offensive Taylor Swift.
6. "No Good For You".
Always with your new boy
But he ain't all that, but you don't know it yet
No you can't take him home for the holidays
Better keep him away
Cause he's such a tool, girl
And everyone would say I bet...
What you're feeling it ain't love
Cause he called me yesterday
And he asked me on a date
Tried to play you like a fool
Not only does she hate men, but she needs her friends to hate men too. She takes pride in insulting men, when in reality, a relationship is between two people, and gender does not decide what kind of person someone will be in a relationship. I know tons of great guys and terrible girls, so why don't you write about that MTrain?
7. "Mr. Almost".
Tryna force puzzle piece,
Not a perfect fit for me
But they told me give it time.
Maybe Cupid missed my chest
'Cause I keep looking left
And you ain't mister right
I hope it didn't come off as a tease
First, you don't need a man to be happy. Not everyone has a "Mr" anything. The second lyric is worth mentioning because, again, she depicts women as sexual objects men deserve simply based off how we act.
8. "Credit".
Lately I'm feeling stupid and crazy
'Cause I saw him with his new baby
And he treats her like she's the one
It's not that I want him back
Ain't trying to be mean
But I bought him brand new clothes
And burned his skinny jeans,
And she'll never know
That I made him better for her
I gave him swag, I made him cool,
He used to be a fool
Yo... he used to be whack
But I made him all that
Well shit, if you think of my last name
I guess my trainings where it's at
OK, so maybe this one is worse than "Dear Future Husband". I happen to really like the beat in this one, so, I guess I ignored the horribly offensive lyrics. Girls, (and guys!) you are not stupid nor crazy if you are feeling upset after a breakup. Also, I hate that she implies that this guy would be nothing without her. Looks aren't everything.
Obviously, not all of her songs are like this, but a good majority of them are. I'm not saying that people shouldn't listen to Meghan Trainor. I've never been one to judge anyone's taste in music, and these songs are very upbeat and catchy. But, be weary of the message she is sending out to both us and the younger generations.
