When you think of Kesha, glitter, oldies-but-goldies (like "Tik Tok") and more glitter are probably the first things to come to mind. Or if you are more caught up on pop culture, you will probably recall her ongoing legal battles with her now former producer, Dr. Luke. But whichever it may be, you can clear it out now because Kesha is back with new music unlike anything before.
The singer has been left unable to create new music for over four years due to being caught up in legal battles against her former producer, Dr. Luke. She accused him of abusing, drugging and raping her throughout the time they had worked together. She wanted to get out of her contract with Sony Music and Kemosabe Records, Dr. Luke's label. Her former producer denied all charges and after a drawn out process, Kesha ultimately was unable to get out of the contract which required her to record six more albums with the label. This left her stuck in limbo, unwanting to work with Sony or Kemosabe and unable to produce her own music while still under contract with them.
Finally, she is back and better than ever. The label is allowing her to record without any involvement from Dr.Luke. After having previously spoken about how she had little to no creative say in her music thus far, it is clear that Kesha has finally taken control while working with a new producer. Her single "Praying," is extremely powerful and different than anything she's ever put out before.
The song opens up with a haunting monologue, saying, "Why have I been abandoned by everyone and everything I've ever known...I've ever loved? What is the lesson? What is the point?" The video shows her in a dream-like place being chased by pig men, who I can only assume represent Dr. Luke, Sony, the industry and anyone who has ever hurt her. The song goes on to talk about what she's been through, how she has found strength within herself through faith and how she hopes that her abusers can do the same.
The song shows off Kesha's stunning vocals (Did you HEAR that whistle note!?) and the music video features beautiful imagery, colors and religious symbols. I don't think I am too far off in saying that it seems to be depicting her journey of discovering faith out of the dark place she was in. It felt like a beautiful and exceptionally forgiving way of addressing her abusers, by hoping that they are praying and becoming better people.
Kesha penned an article for Lenny Letter where she writes, "It's from our darkest moments that we gain the most strength. There were so many days, months even, when I didn't want to get out of bed...but I dragged myself out of bed and took my emotions to the studio and made art out of them." She made beauty from her pain and in doing so, created a work of art that can inspire and empower others through their own struggles.
Kesha (who has officially dropped the $) just released another song called "Woman." It is yet another banger, a little more light hearted but still filled with strength and empowerment. She seems to be releasing singles each week, leading up to the release of her new album "Rainbow" on August 11.
Kesha, we are so glad to have you back and can't wait to be inspired by what else you have to offer the world with your new found freedom.
