This box office record breaker has people in awe, so I asked UK students about their take on the meaning of the plot.

Student's Theories About Jordan Peele's Film, 'Us'

Jordan Peele's latest film, "Us," had people left speechless all around the world. This movie is responsible for all the memes about "your tethered," and how you may not want to know who your doppelganger is after all. This horror film will have you on the edge of your seat all throughout and will leave you questioning EVERYTHING about the movie at the very end. The ending is what makes the film and, honestly, had me initially confused. I asked students what they think the movie's meaning was and the following quotes below are what they had to say.

"Classism"

us

"The tether represents the poor, even though they look like us." - Kendall

"'Us' is about how people tend to blame outsiders for all of our problems instead of looking to our roots."

giphy

- Anya

"You are definitely your own enemy with your shadow."

giphy

- Tessa

"You are your own worst enemy."

giphy

- Bradley

"The duality of man for sure, good and evil."

giphy

- Zach

"Honestly I don't know but the fact that Fu** The Police was playing in a white household tells me race [is involved]."

giphy

- Jordan

"Your past never actually goes away no matter how hard you try and move forward."

giphy

- Rachel

"The American Dream ain't all that."

giphy

"Poor people be leaving their poor homes but end up getting isolated in America just as bad, or even worse. The American Dream needs to die." - Isaac

"How politics has compressed the poorest of people."

giphy

- Sasha

"We're killing ourselves with our own negativity."

giphy

- Ryan

"Trump."

giphy

- Felix

When I watched this film, I loved it, but then became so confused once I got to the ending. Once I grasped what the ending was, I totally appreciated the complexity and originality of the piece itself. According to Jordan Peele in an interview with The Root, the following is what inspired him to write the screenplay: "[When] I decided to write this movie, I was stricken with the fact that we are in a time where we fear the other, whether it is the mysterious invader that we think is going to come and kill us or take our jobs or the faction that we don't live near that voted a different way than us. We're all pointing the finger and I want to suggest that [when] making a monster, we really need to look at our face. Maybe the evil is us."

United Nations Day 2023: Understanding The U.N.

As the General Assembly convenes, here is the United Nations 101

Multiple countries flags on poles

For an organization that literally unites the nations, it amazes me how little is taught about the United Nations in schools, or at least where I went to school. It wasn't until I went to college and got a higher education that I learned the basics of the United Nations. I believe that every American should know at least the basics of what the United Nations does, especially since our country is one of the 5 permanent members, and what better day to do that than United Nations Day (today!). So here are the main "organs" of the United Nations:

The Spooky History Of Halloween

The traditions of Halloween have come a long way from their ancient origins. Originating around 2,000 years ago, a tradition known as "All Hollows' Eve" began at the end of the harvest season. The ancient Celts would dress in costumes and light a bonfire to ward off evil spirits. Back then, with the cold brought death, and it was a way they believed to keep them safe.

Passport To Paris
Grace Bolinger

I’ve done my fair share of trekking around the world; however, I forgot a few important things as I embarked on my journey to move to Paris, France, for a couple months. I feel blessed to be in this place known for its good food, beautiful architecture, historical artifacts, and lights. I feel nervous to be in this place, but I have already learned a lot that I will hopefully continue to expound on as I live my daily life here.

Why I Don't Have An iPhone

Or any smartphone, for that matter

Why I Don't Have An iPhone

I am 21 years old, and I do not have a smartphone. While my peers have gone through countless phones, upgrading the moment Apple or Samsung releases a new model, I have only owned three phones. I’ve used my current phone, a Samsung Intensity III (a slide phone with a keyboard), for about two years.
