New York Magazine

Alright, Mr. President: let’s talk. You’ve spent the entire campaign season degrading women, people of color, LGBTQ+ folx, and many more. We women have to face plenty of men like you in our lives, but never have we encountered someone with a mind (or hands) smaller than yours.

But, you know what? No. No, no, no, no, no. No. You cannot and will not win. Women in the United States and around the world have been dealing with people like you since the beginning of time. We’re too busy crushing the patriarchy, empowering little girls, saving the environment, and standing up for those under attack by your government and other regimes across the world to bow down to the oppressor. Lucky for us, we have some fierce ladies helping us achieve female greatness through music.

Nasty women unite!

1. Andra Day, “Rise Up”

Nasty lyric:

“I'll rise up

In spite of the ache

I'll rise up

And I'll do it a thousands times again.”

2. Beyoncé, “Run The World (Girls)”

Nasty lyric:

“Boy I know you love it

How we're smart enough to make these millions

Strong enough to bear the children

Then get back to business.”

3. Alessia Cara, “Scars To Your Beautiful”

Nasty lyric:

“So to all the girls that's hurting

Let me be your mirror, help you see a little bit clearer

The light that shines within.”

4. Lily Allen, “Hard Out Here”

Nasty lyric:

“If I told you 'bout my sex life, you'd call me a slut

When boys be talkin' about their b******, no one's makin' a fuss

There's a glass ceilin' to break, uh-huh, there's money to make

And now it's time to speed it up 'cause I can't move at this pace.”

5. No Doubt, “Just A Girl”

Nasty lyric:

“Oh I'm just a girl

Take a good look at me

Just your typical prototype

Oh, I've had it up to here!”

6. Christina Aguilera, “Beautiful”

Nasty lyric:

“I am beautiful

No matter what they say

Words can't bring me down

I am beautiful

In every single way

Yes words can't bring me down

Oh no

So don't you bring me down today.”

7. Joni Mitchell, “Big Yellow Taxi”

Nasty lyric:

“Hey farmer, farmer

Put away that DDT now

Give me spots on my apples

But leave me the birds and the bees.”

8. Beyonce & Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, “***Flawless”

Beyonce’s nasty lyric:

“You wake up, flawless

Post up, flawless

Ride round in it, flawless

Flossin' on that, flawless

This diamond, flawless

My diamond, flawless

This rock, flawless

My rock, flawless

I woke up like this

I woke up like this.”

Adichie’s nasty lyric:

“Because I am female

I am expected to aspire to marriage

I am expected to make my life choices

Always keeping in mind that

Marriage is the most important

Now marriage can be a source of

Joy and love and mutual support

But why do we teach girls to aspire to marriage

And we don't teach boys the same?”

9. Mary Lambert, “She Keeps Me Warm”

Nasty lyric:

“And I can’t change, even if I tried

Even if I wanted to

And I can’t change, even if I tried

Even if I wanted to

My love, my love, my love, my love

She keeps me warm, she keeps me warm

She keeps me warm, she keeps me warm.”

10. Sara Bareilles, “Brave”

Nasty lyric:

“You can be amazing

You can turn a phrase into a weapon or a drug

You can be the outcast

Or be the backlash of somebody's lack of love

Or you can start speaking up.”

11. Katy Perry, “Roar”

Nasty lyric:

“I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter

Dancing through the fire

'Cause I am the champion, and you're gonna hear me roar

Louder, louder than a lion

'Cause I am a champion, and you're gonna hear me roar!”

12. Rachel Platten, “Fight Song”

Nasty lyric:

“Like how a single word

Can make a heart open

I might only have one match

But I can make an explosion.”

15. Demi Lovato, “Confident”

Nasty lyric:

“I used to hold my freak back

Now I'm letting go

I make my own choice

B****, I run this show

So leave the lights on

No, you can't make me behave.”

16. Pink & Indigo Girls, “Dear Mr. President”

Nasty lyric:

“How can you say

No child is left behind?

We're not dumb and we're not blind.

They're all sitting in your cells

While you pave the road to hell.”

BONUS:

“Let me tell you 'bout hard work

Minimum wage with a baby on the way

Let me tell you 'bout hard work

Rebuilding your house after the bombs took them away

Let me tell you 'bout hard work

Building a bed out of a cardboard box

Let me tell you 'bout hard work

Hard work

Hard work

You don't know nothing 'bout hard work

Hard work

Hard work

Oh.”

17. Indigo Girls, “Closer To Fine”

Nasty lyric:

“I went to the doctor, I went to the mountains

I looked to the children, I drank from the fountain.

There's more than one answer to these questions

pointing me in a crooked line.

And the less I seek my source for some definitive,

the closer I am to fine. The closer I am to fine.”

18. Meghan Trainor, “NO”

Nasty lyric:

“Thank you in advance,

I don't wanna dance (nope)

I don't need your hands all over me

If I want a man,

Then I'mma get a man

But it's never my priority.”

19. Yuna, “Rescue”

Nasty lyric:

“That girl is you, yeah

And that girl is me

That girl is stronger than the raging sea.”

“There's a scream inside that we all try to hide

We hold on so tight, we cannot deny

Eats us alive, oh it eats us alive, oh

Yes, there's a scream inside that we all try to hide

We hold on so tight, but I don't wanna die, no

I don't wanna die, I don't wanna die, yeah.”

22. Bea Miller, “Young Blood”

It's a nightmare, it's a nightmare

When the sun don't shine we lose our minds

Wave it in his face, tell him, boy, bye.”

24. Sia, “Elastic Heart”

Nasty lyric:

“Well I've got thick skin and an elastic heart

But your blade it might be too sharp

I'm like a rubber band until you pull too hard

But I may snap when I move close

But you won't see me fall apart

'Cause I've got an elastic heart.”

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
