Dear Aunt Becky, May The Internet Have Mercy On You
Lori Loughlin and many other celebrities have been charges with a scandal that has to do with college admissions.
Recently, it's been revealed that many celebrities including beloved Aunt Becky from Full House, Lori Loughlin, have been charged with bribing colleges to admit their unimpressive children. Basically, they paid people to change their test scores, or in the case of Loughlin, they paid to have their daughters be a part of the crew team at the University of Southern California. If you don't know about USC, it's a top university, ranked #22 in the nation. The other schools involved are the University of California, Las Angeles, Wake Forest University, and Georgetown University.
In the wake of this whole scandal, I can't help but reflect and think about the friends that I have made these past seven months of college who are some of the hardest workers I've ever met. I have a friend who came to Florida State University on a scholarship. I've seen her work, and she always puts her all into everything she does. However, she still has to hold back from certain opportunities because her scholarship won't cover it.
My cousin goes to the University of Pennsylvania (which is an Ivy League). My whole life, I've seen how hard she worked. Throughout her high school years and undergrad years, she continued her education and still worked a part-time job. After undergrad, she worked full-time and studies to take her GRE. Now, she's getting her Masters in Social Work at an Ivy League. I can't help but feel frustrated for her, because even though she should be able to focus on her education completely. Instead, the stress of her student loans constantly weighs on her.
I'm aware there are many many more people involved in this scandal, but I'm focusing on Lori Loughlin because firstly, I've admired her since I was little and watched Full House almost every day, and secondly, the information I have access to focuses on her case as well as Felicity Huffman, and I have no idea who she is.
Anyways, Lori Loughlin's daughters are very beautiful, just like their mom; however, they have no ambition, no work ethic and no understanding of the immense privilege they have being in this world. Not only are their parents paying for them to be in a college that so many people have dreams of going to but have no way of paying for it. Her youngest daughter, Olivia Jade Giannuli, has a YouTube account where she revealed to her 2 million followers that she admitted that she "doesn't really care about school".
Obviously, the people involved in this scandal aren't the worst people in the world, but they are a small part of a much bigger problem of unchecked privilege, capitalism corrupting education, and the vicious cycle for those who are part of a lower socioeconomic status. Even though she definitely deserves punishment for her involvement in this, I do wish Lori and everyone else involved some strength to deal with this inevitable backlash she's about to face from the scariest being to exist: trolls on the internet... have mercy!
