I'm a journalism major and public relations minor, both of which fall under the Communication Arts and Sciences Department (ComArts). Quite a few people seem to bash ComArts majors.
If you've got a similar major, I'm sure you've heard things like "communications is so easy", "what do you even do?", "why would you even major in that?", "communications majors don't work very hard", or "what jobs can you even have?"
At Michigan State, the ComArts Department includes the majors of creative advertising, advertising management, communication, journalism, and media and information. Some minors it also includes are broadcast journalism, sports journalism, sales leadership, documentary production, entrepreneurship and innovation, animation and comics storytelling in media, and public relations. There are even more minors that complement the ComArts degrees, along with specializations, concentrations, and focus areas.
There are many jobs that are in these career fields, as well as a lot of work to be done. I think some people would be surprised to see the amount of work, time, and effort that goes into some of the videos, advertisements, articles, and games you see. Much of the work we do in these classes are similar to the work that we will actually be doing in our careers, and some of it is actually published while we are still students.
Yes, I don't have any big exams this semester. However, while I may not have midterm or final exams, I have a lot of projects.
ComArts majors tend to have a lot of projects and assignments that can take awhile. While you might have your science, math, or engineering problems to do for homework, we might have to film and edit videos, do photo projects, and write articles that will actually be published. These types of assignments can take quite a while, so other majors should really stop bashing ComArts majors.
I'm not saying one major has it easier than another or more important. They're all important and the majors are just different. Different people have different skill sets so they major in different things. One person might be better at solving math problems, but they might have no clue how to properly write an article following AP style and a certain format.
Some people are able to work on more logical problems, while others can work on more creative problems. All majors can be hard and involve a lot of work, so let's stop bashing certain majors.
