Well, I Was Dead Wrong About 'Big Brother 20'
Expect the unexpected, ya feel?
08 October 2018
161
At the beginning of the summer, I made my predictions about who would reign supreme on "Big Brother 20." I didn't know it at the time, but this season would go back to basics and stay true to the original concept of "Big Brother" and become one of the absolute best seasons I've seen in years. Because I didn't know that, my predictions about the way the season would pan out were way off. Let's take a look at the final rankings of the houseguests based on their order of eviction:
16. Steve, Previous Ranking: 10
I thought Steve had a shot because of his background as a police officer. Perhaps I was just associating him too closely with Derrick Levasseur from "Big Brother 16." Unfortunately, Steve's inability to connect with other houseguests because of his older age (40) led to his quick demise this season.
15. Swaggy C, Previous Ranking: 6
Oh Swaggy, if only you had kept your mouth shut, you may have been able to make it to at least jury. His attitude overpowered his ability to play the game, sadly.
14. Winston, Previous Ranking: 1
This one breaks my heart. Winston was very well-equipped to go very far in this game, but as many houseguests do, he let his emotions get the best of him during his time on the block.
13. Kaitlyn, Previous Ranking: 16
To be honest, I'm shocked that Kaitlyn actually made it this far. Her wacky personality seemed like it would turn people off to her, but in an unpredictable twist in events, it was actually her flirting and extreme jealousy that led to her ultimate downfall. If only she had stayed loyal to her man back home...
12. Rachel, Previous Ranking: 3
This is a blindside if I've ever seen it. I really thought she would manage to beat out Brett at the eviction, considering she treated her houseguests a whole lot better than Brett did and she wasn't a real threat to the integrity of Level 6. I'm still sad she left so soon.
11. Bayleigh, Previous Ranking: 11
Woohoo, I totally called this one! Bayleigh was a good player, but she got too roped up in the drama of the house to be able to stick around much longer. At least she made it to jury!
10. Rockstar, Previous Ranking: 15
My original description of Rockstar, "She's a mother who calls herself "Rockstar." She's so out there, I don't know if she'll be able to play the game well," was right on point. She managed to ride the game out until jury though because she joined an alliance and laid low until she didn't have a choice.
9. Faysal, Previous Ranking: 8
Just like Rockstar, Fessy found an alliance and stuck with them until his end. Sadly for him though, he turned into just another Level 6 target.
8. Scottie, Previous Ranking: 14
Well, I guess everyone did think Scottie was adorable... at least until they found out he really knew how to play the game anyway. After winning Jury Battle Back, Scottie earned more time in the "Big Brother" House, which improved his overall ranking, even though he didn't last long on his second try.
7. Haleigh, Previous Ranking: 13
I'm laughing at myself for thinking Haleigh was going to be one of the biggest floaters in the game this season. I'm thrilled she turned out to be one of the best players I've seen in awhile. In my opinion, she's only second to Tyler, and if she and Tyler had worked together, they could've dominated the whole season.
6. Brett, Previous Ranking: 7
Good ol' cocky Brett. For his sake as a human being, I sure hope his attitude was a joke this season. However, I do feel bad about him being backdoored because that was a backdoor even viewers didn't necessarily see coming.
5. Sam, Previous Ranking: 4
Sweet Sam started to go a little crazy in the House, as many players do. According to internet rumors, she was randomly selected to be on the show and did not apply herself, so that may explain some of why she played the game the way she did near the end.
4. Angela, Previous Ranking: 2
In the words of Rachel, what's wrong with Angela?! She seemed like a genuinely kind human being going into the game, but she turned out to be pretty mean in the end. I do appreciate the game moves she made and cannot wait to watch her relationship with Tyler grow outside of the house.
3. JC, Previous Ranking: 12
If JC isn't the definition of a floater, I don't know who is. He jumped back and forth between the two main alliances in the house which led him to believe he was the ultimate puppet master of the game. In reality, he only won one competition and was never actually in control of anything except his rude, sexist, and racist comments.
2. Tyler, Previous Ranking: 9
I definitely fell for the "dumb surfer boy" persona he was going for at the beginning of the game. However, this just makes me appreciate his game play even more than I already did. Tyler is by far one of the greatest players to ever play "Big Brother," and I will forever be in awe of his gameplay.
1. Kaycee, Previous Ranking: 4
Kaycee is the "Big Brother" champion I never saw coming. I love when caring and honest people come out on top because that's not always what happens in our society. From a superfan perspective, Tyler played the game better, but from a human perspective, I know being nice gets you a long way in life. Let's go!
Honestly though, I'm pretty glad I was wrong. BB superfans needed to see someone like Tyler actually play the game the way it should be played, and America as a whole needed to be reminded that ethnicity and sexuality don't determine a person's worth and Kaycee's big win did that.
Now, let the countdown begin to "Celebrity Big Brother 2" and "Big Brother 21!"

I Admire Sam For The Way She's Playing 'Big Brother'
I don't think this one is too unexpected, Julie Chen.

From the first episode, all of America knew: Sam is a total sweetheart. We felt for her when she was given one of the worst punishments in "Big Brother" history and had to spend her first week in the house as a robot (yes, a robot... see below).
Luckily though, Sam has risen up the totem pole by getting a BB Power App, surviving the first eviction, and becoming the 4th HOH (Head of Household), all while forming a bond with Tyler, aka the most powerful player in the house. The HOH is safe from eviction for the week, must nominate two houseguests for replacement, plays in the Veto competition, replaces nominees during the Veto ceremony if needed, and only places an eviction vote in the event of a tie.
Most players who become HOH tend to be willing to hear everyone out and are often persuaded by their allies when picking their nominations for eviction. Sam did no such thing. She came inside from the HOH competition and declared that she already knew who she was dominating. She wouldn't even tell Tyler, her closest ally.
Also unheard of in the "Big Brother" House, Sam announced that the HOH room would be her own private room and that no one could be in the room if she was not in there, needing Sam's permission to even be in the room.
At the nomination ceremony, Sam nominated Haleigh and Kaitlyn, noting the way they use their sexuality to stay ahead in the game by manipulating the men into keeping them safe. Immediately, Haleigh and Kaitlyn erupted in the Diary Room. Haleigh was embarrassed that her family saw what she was being nominated for, while Kaitlyn insisted that Sam's nomination speech was "the opposite of women supporting women."
The Internet had lots of opinions about Sam's strategies as HOH. Some think she did the right thing, and others believe she made huge social game mistakes as she knew her BB Power App will offer the evicted player the opportunity to reenter the house.
Personally, I think Sam is playing "Big Brother" the way it's meant to be played. As HOH, she earned herself the right to make the rules about the HOH room for Week 4. No one else was able to hang onto the wall for as long as she did; she gets a reward. Sam also made the right call about nominations. She did not take influence from any other player and chose to go after her honest targets. Most other players would've made the "easy" move by getting out a non-threat. Sam, on the other hand, picked her nominees because they rule the house in a way she doesn't: they flirt to get ahead, a tried and true BB strategy, and Sam's just not that kind of girl. She recognizes that if it came down to final two and Fessy, Brett, and/or Tyler made it to jury, they would most likely vote for the girls that flirted with them over the girl that was their friend.
Even though Sam chose to go after only female players, I don't think Kaitlyn made a fair assessment of the situation. Like I said, Sam focused on nominees that play a very different game than her, a game that's hard to compete with. Additionally, women are not mandated to support women that demean themselves to solely sexual objects to get ahead. Kaitlyn's actions in the house thus far have reflected poorly on women and our values, if she really wants to group us all into one category as her comment suggests.
So yes, Sam's moves are controversial. However, she is bringing back the sort of gameplay, the kind where you actually PLAY THE FREAKING GAME with winning in mind, that made "Big Brother" what it is in the first place.

College Students Living At Home This Summer, Binge these 10 Shows Instead Of Losing Your Cool
Going back to school has never sounded so wonderful.
01 August 2018
81
While it's nice to spend a weekend at home during the school year, moving back into your childhood home with your family for the summer is a lot to handle. Parents tend to revert to treating you like you haven't just had a year of complete freedom.
Personally, I'm getting to the point that I just can't take it anymore, and I still have about a month to go. In order to maintain my sanity, I've decided to distract myself by watching all the TV I probably won't have time to watch once classes start again. These 10 shows are the best because they are so far from reality that I finally feel like I have an escape.
1. "Jane the Virgin" (Netflix and The CW)
Giphy"Jane the Virgin" is an hour-long show that follows Jane, a 23-year-old virgin, who is accidentally artificially inseminated with the sperm of a guy she used to have a crush on. "Jane" is a go-to for me because it follows a telenovela-like format, so it's about as far from reality as possible.
2. "The Office" (Netflix)
Giphy"The Office" is quite likely your fave show to binge already, but it's so funny that you can laugh your way through the chaos of living with your family again.
3. "House Hunters" (Hulu and HGTV)
GiphyOkay so, there are two reasons this show made my list: 1) Buying a house probably isn't on your agenda at the moment and pretending to buy one is fun and 2) People are so extra and it's fun to watch.
4. "Gilmore Girls" (Netflix and Freeform)
GiphyThis show is known for its fast-talking characters, so if it's your first watch "Gilmore Girls requires your undivided attention. (If reading is more your thing, check out this "Gilmore Girls" inspired reading list.)
5. "Love It Or List It" (Playstation Vue and HGTV)
GiphyThis one is my favorite at the moment. Hilary and David play up the dramatics and the couples always seem to find something to argue about. Plus, it's an hour-long design show, so there's actually a story to follow.
6. "One Tree Hill" (Hulu)
Giphy"One Tree Hill" brings up many important topics about real life, but so many of the elements of the show are unlikely to happen in real life.
7. "Making a Murderer" (Netflix)
GiphyYes, this is a documentary series. However, the events are so ridiculous it's hard to believe this all actually happened.
8. "Big Brother" (CBS All Access)
GiphyThis sociology experiment is in its 20th season and just keeps on getting better. "Big Brother" is my most favorite part of the summer. (Yes, this is where THAT gif comes from)
9. "How I Met Your Mother" (Hulu)
Giphy"HIMYM" never, ever gets old. Plus, there are very few (if any) plot gaps. The quality and laughs are there, trust me. You'll be able to pass the time easily.
10. "Scandal" (Netflix and Hulu)
GiphyIf you thought "Grey's Anatomy" was intense, boy does Shonda Rhimes have a surprise for you. You'll easily be able to ignore your family with "Scandal" on the TV.
So, which show(s) are you going to add to your summer binge list?
