4 Things To Do Today If You Live In A Small Town

Listen, I know a lot of people have the luxury of living in a big city or even just a regular old city, but I don't. My town's population barely hits 8,000, and there's only one high school in it. I graduated with about 200 other kids. It's summer now, so I'm back home from college. Between work and sleep, there's little time to myself. What time I do have, however, I make sure to make the most of it. If you're in the same boat as me, here's what you can do, too.

1. Hang out in the Wal-Mart parking lot.

Didn't you know? If your hometown doesn't have a movie theater, the Wal-Mart parking lot is the perfect place to get all your entertainment needs met. In just an hour you can see a bunch of rednecks doing donuts, a drunk guy running into everything, people being arrested or chased out, and even at least twenty people that you forgot ever even existed. And the best part, it's FREE! I know that's what college students love.

2. Hop in your car.

Are people driving you crazy? Is your family too loud? Do you just need some you time? Just hope in your car, fill up your tank, and put the pedal to the metal. Roll your windows down, crank that music up as high as you can, and just go. And if you feel that might be a little lonely, grab a friend and go for it. You'll both actually have a lot of fun, I promise.

3. Visit your old high school.

I know, I know, who wants to go back to hell? The thing is, I've never met someone who didn't have at least one teacher they love and admire. Go visit that one (or five) and tell them how much they impacted your life. Or just go back in and see how far you've come, and remember that you've still got so far to go.

4. Take a nap.

Girl, you know you're tired. You know college took a lot of you. Coming back home, going back to work, seeing old friends. Hiding from people you don't want to see. That's going to take a lot out of you too. Take a break, close your eyes, fall into the dream world, and ignore your responsibilities. It's my favorite thing to do.

Okay, so clearly my tips aren't the most helpful in the world. Truth be told, I've been living in this same, small town for upwards of 15 years now, and I still get bored out of my mind. I understand the pain of not being able to do anything, and constantly going crazy. But nonetheless, I love this place I get to call home.

Summer isn't alway just fun in the sun.

Summer Slump

Summer is a time for fun in the sun, hanging out with friends, and living it up, but for some people, that's not the case. Summer is a nightmare for idle minds. Let me explain what I mean by that. For people with mental illness having the extra time to think and relax can be devastating for their mental health. Now, this isn't a problem for everyone but for some people who suffer from mental illness, this is a reality.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) reported that about 35.7% of 12th graders in the U.S. had used marijuana in the past year, and 11.8% reported daily use. As for coming to school under the influence, specific statistics can be hard to come by, but there is concern that the increasing social acceptance of marijuana may lead to higher rates of use among teenagers.
