With every new year comes a new list of resolutions on how to improve and enjoy a better year than the previous one. These goals can often be lengthy, and rendered obsolete by the second week. It is much more effective to incrementally work on goals, splitting them up by month, and even by week. So, here are 5 short term goals for January, 2019, to get the new year off on the right foot!

1. Drink more water!

This is an extremely important part of our health as human beings, so it is a FANTASTIC goal for the month of January! It is recommended that we drink approximately 64 oz of water per day, and that is a lot, so try to increase the amount of water by small increments to get to this ultimate goal. While you're doing activities such as watching TV or doing homework, have a water bottle close by so you can increase your ounces without even thinking about it.

2. Meditate once per week

Mindful meditation is extremely healing for the mind and body, so I would definitely recommend making this a priority for the start of 2019. With apps like Calm, guided meditation has never been so easy or convenient. I, personally, like to turn on a Calm meditation right before I go to sleep. It helps me calm (no pun intended) my thoughts and get me ready for bedtime.

3. Keep a journal

So, you want to continue documenting what's going on in your life but you want to stay off social media. Luckily, there is a solution for that! Journaling is a great way to express your thoughts and document your life without the toxicity and harm social media can bring. Writing a page in your diary every night before bed is a great way to reflect on the day and stay off your phone before turning in for the night.

4. Increase your fruit and veggie intake

This resolution will look slightly different for each person. If you already eat plenty of produce; that's awesome! Or if, like most people, you struggle with getting enough fruits and veg, try increasing the amount of produce you eat by one serving. In other words, add one fruit and one veggie to your meals for the day. This goal is attainable and will help you make a healthy change to your diet.

5. Read one book for pleasure

Going along with the theme of staying off our phones, reading for pleasure is a great way to pass the free time, and relax. Setting a goal of reading one book for the month of January is practical, and will hopefully help you relax and immerse yourself in a great story.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
