It's that time of year again. The gym is packed and everyone is searching for their "meaning." The time of year when everyone wants a major change in their lives. Well, to be frank, that's a load of bullshit. I don't believe in New Year's resolutions. To me, it's the classic phrase we all know: "the diet starts Monday." Yeah, that pointless phrase. The one most of us use way too often.
New Year's resolutions are just another way to excuse changing. Change is important to growth. Some people are scared of it, but it's a fear you have to face to progress into a better person. Life is boring when you sit stagnant in the same spot, and that's what your resolutions are doing to you. You say that this year will be "your year." Will it, though? Because you made the same false promise last year. So, to all of you that are waiting to change for the new year, this is what I have to say to you.
Change today. Don't wait for a new year. Time is a concept created by humanity. It's not something that you should measure your life by. Tomorrow is a new day and you get to start all over, but when you measure your life by years or days, you don't live. You hinder your life.
Change today because it won't make a difference whether you do it now or later. Putting your life on hold to change a week from now will only hinder who you are as a person. Change at the moment you feel the need to because that's when you will feel most inspired to do it. If you want to start working out and eating healthier, start this morning or tomorrow morning. If you want to be more patient, kind or involved in life, do it with the people you interact with today, not tomorrow or next week.
The thing about New Year's resolutions is that they don't do anything to change your life. They're a spur of the moment decision that people say because of the collective pressure to have a resolution. Set your goals and start them today, not tomorrow, because postponing your goals will only lead to further blockades and fewer outcomes.
