Keep in mind this is coming from a girl with tiny hands and even tinier nail beds, and without them, my hands look incredibly bear. When I noticed more and more pointy claws popping up on celebs and fashionistas all over the web, I knew exactly what my next salon appointment would entail! Now, about a week into my love affair with my new red carpet talons, I come bearing the pro’s and cons for all you newcomers contemplating going for the claw!
Pros:1. Well for one, they look amazing. Seriously, I’ve never enjoyed looking at my hands more! Whether you go for a dark color with a matte overlay, one spectacular peep nail or a design on every tip, the look won’t disappoint I can promise you that!
2. Everyone LOVES being scratched with them, and yes, I mean everyone. My roommates, my boyfriend, even my cat lines up in the morning for a good old-fashioned scratch under his chin, and let me tell you, he is not exactly the cuddliest of the bunch. But once I give him a little rub behind the ears with these babies, he turns to putty in my hands!
3. They can act as a make shift toothed comb in the shower! I don’t know about you guys, but I have a full head of crazy curls and the best way for me to tame my situation, is with a wide toothed comb and some conditioner under the shower-head! And with these nails, all I have to do is run them through my mane in the mornings with some product, and voila! I’m in “hair-a-dise.”
4. They make any outfit look instantly trendier! But come on, we all knew this one. Claws are in! And whether you’re trying to nail that job interview at a classy boutique, getting rowdy with your girls for your 21st birthday bash, or just spending a day shopping solo, your claws will always be by your side!
CONS:1. Well we all saw this one coming: texting and typing is totally harder with a set of claws on, but it’s easy to get used to and honestly we could all spend a little less time focused on technology! But for those of us that have to be text ready 24/7, it gets easier once you learn to use the pads of your fingers as opposed to the tips!
2. The contact situation.I don’t know about you guys, but I’ve been wearing contacts since the seventh grade, and I’m not about to stop now! Much like texting, it’s hard to remove my soft contact lenses every night with a sharp claw in the way, but I’ve since adapted and learned to successfully insert and remove my lenses without any fatal scratches!
3. Opening cans; whether it be soda or something else, it can be very difficult with claws on (not that it wasn’t difficult with the square variation of acrylic nails either), but this, like the other pros on the list, is easily fixable by simply using the side of your finger to pop open the can instead of your nail! And besides, I’m sure in most situations that call for can opening, there will be someone with big strong hands nearby waiting to assist.
As you can see, life with claws can be luxurious, but also a struggle. But my general consensus is, why not? The Salon that I recommend is called Millie’s, and it is in Pacific Beach. They are amazing and listened to every correction I gave them, and one lady in particular had the shaping technique down pat! So get out there and have some fun with your next mani-pedi, because claws are poppin’ this season and everyone deserves to be fierce for fall!
