Each year I have the privilege of photographing Metrocon down in Tampa, Florida, and each year I focus (get it?) on shooting the raves in particular. Below I'll show some digital shots I took last year, and explain briefly my thought process for each. I also highly recommend that each of you consider checking out Metrocon at some point, because it is a huge highlight of my year.
My all-time favorite lens for shooting the raves is the Nikon 50mm f/1.8, although this year I'm going to rely a lot on my Sigma Art 20mm f/1.4, and I'm excited to see how it performs.
I love capturing nonsense like this. Billy and Tim destroyed the bounce house while the crew was setting up.
One thing I always have to battle is the fog, however, the positive side is that the lasers look awesome to shoot. Finding the balance of shutter speed is important, especially in low light work like this.
With the giant amounts of people, sometimes interesting composition elements appear, and knowing when to snap is an important aspect as well.
I loved the translucency of this material. ISO was important here to keep the whites from being too blown out.
Metrocon Massive is a really interesting shoot because it is almost a hybrid between concert photography and fashion work, which is just incredibly interesting to me. I'll close out the article with a couple more shots, and you can view the entire collection here.
I would really encourage everyone to check that album out, as there are a lot of really fun shots contained inside.
