Disney's spin-off show, Girl Meets World, has a lot to live up to. If you're anything like me, you loved Boy Meets World and prayed for nights that this new show was going to be an amazing continuation of the original show. Thankfully, it is! One of the best features of the show is that the character Maya Hart is very relatable. If you don't watch the show, Maya Hart is the best friend of Riley Matthews (the daughter of Corey and Topanga Matthews) and her life wasn't all rainbows and unicorns. She grew up without her father and knew that her Mom had to take the responsibility of two parents, which meant she couldn't always be there. If you know what that's like, you know it's a hard lesson to learn at a young age. Some of her major life lessons were some that I wish I have heard when I was younger.
1. It was never my fault...
This episode was all about forgiveness and knowing Maya had always held some type of anger towards her father, you could guess that she was going to attempt at forgiving him. She wrote him a letter asking to talk to him face to face and figure out why he really left. She mentions that she wanted to know what she did to make him leave, even if a tiny part of her knew it was never truly her fault.
"I am happy I wrote to you, and heard what you had to say and it makes me feel better knowing I had nothing to do with what you did. I always thought this was my fault somehow, and it's not."
2. Forgive yourself....
After Maya walks away from her father telling him she couldn't forgive him for leaving. She walks up to Corey and has this heart to heart with him over what the actual meaning of the assignment was. The assignment was about forgiveness, but he wanted her to forgive herself, not her father.
Maya: I'm sorry, I failed. I know you wanted me to forgive him but I didn't, I couldn't do it. You were wrong about this one Mr. Matthews.
Corey: I never expected that Maya, that kind of forgiveness, doesn't come so easy. But life is a long time and I hope you get there someday. But that was never what I was looking for right now.
Maya: What did you want from me?
Corey: Maya, did you forgive yourself?
3. Most of all, you stay with your best friend
This was the most recent episode of Girl Meets world, and we find out that Ava is going through something similar to what Maya went through. It's hard at a young age to understand why parents grow apart, but something we remember is how important our friends are, and to always keep them close. They remind you that you are a better person than you think you are. They're a shoulder to cry on when you think it's your fault and the remind you that it was never your fault. They hold your hand through everything, and they are the people you never want to push away.
Ava: What happens next, Maya?
Maya: When people you've loved all your life suddenly decide to leave? Well, you sit by yourself for a while and you'll try to figure it out. And you'll blame yourself. But it isn't your fault. You probably won't believe that, though, and you'll think you did something wrong, but... you didn't. It isn't your fault. Most of all...you stay with your best friend.
These lessons were very important for anyone who grew up the way this character grew up or even if it was a similar situation. I'm so glad that this show has welcomed topics that do occur in children's everyday life and it also shows that even though life seems dark at the moment; it does get better. I can't wait to see the character development for Maya Hart and see where life takes her.
Girl Meets World airs on Disney Channel at 8:30/7:30c on Fridays.
