*Risin’ up, back on the street. Did my time took my chances.*
The opening lyrics of Eye of the Tiger play as an intro montage in the film "Rocky III," showing the protagonist Rocky Balboa as he continues to win fights and gain stardom.
The song, written by '80s band survivor, became the theme song for the film in 1982 after Rocky’s Sylvester Stallone requested its creation from the band specifically for the film.
After its release, the song gained tremendous popularity worldwide. The public viewed the song as an inspiration, representing the success of a young struggling fighter who, after much dedication and hard work, wins the title of heavyweight champion.
However, when Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis used the song as her personal anthem after her release from jail on Tuesday, September 8th, the message behind Eye of the Tiger changed from an inspirational melody to a political verse supporting Davis’s agenda to deny marital rights to the people of Kentucky.
Davis has refused to issue marriage licenses since the legalization of same-sex marriage at the end of June, which resulted in her arrest on Thursday, September 3rd. A Washington Post article about the event read, “Davis told the judge that ‘God’s moral law’ conflicts with her job duties.”
When Davis emerged from the Carter County Detention Center after five days, she was welcomed by a crowd of cheering people, the sound of Eye of the Tiger slowly fading to silence as she addressed the crowd.
“I just want to give God the glory. His people have rallied and you are a strong people,” said Davis, crying at the sight of her followers.
However, before Davis decided to welcome her loyal supporters of her illegal activity, she should have thought twice about using Eye of the Tiger as her theme song. After a video was released, showing Davis using Eye of the Tiger to rally her troops behind her cause, the band Survivor came out with a statement.
“I was very surprised and dismayed at the misuse of the song I co-wrote with Frankie Sullivan for 'Rocky lll,'” said band member Jim Peterik to Billboard magazine. “The song has motivated thousands through the years to reach beyond their limits. Its use for the release of Kim Davis does not support my views or my politics. I have contacted my publishers to make sure this usage is stopped immediately.”
Though Davis’s supporters view her as a hero for her recent actions, using the song Eye of the Tiger as her anthem served as her fatal flaw. The song speaks to underdogs, those who have to jump through hoops to reach their dream. It talks of hard work, determination, and perseverance. All of these themes do not represent Kim Davis. They represent the people that had to overcome obstacles like Davis to achieve their goals.
“It continues to be a thread in the fabric of millions of lives and it has motivated so many to go beyond their perceived limitations and achieve more than they ever could imagine,” said Peterik.
