Keep the Shutdown, Save Lives.

A response to the protests, and why I favor more social distancing.

Keep the Shutdown, Save Lives.

Oh my dear reader, you may be perplexed and angry at this time. An enemy invisible to all of us is at war with humanity and who we are as a society. This enemy is named corona- the same name as a crown that despots of old would have worn.

A handful of people have started protesting these restrictions and while in normal circumstances I'm for the right to free assembly- these citizens are putting their lives and other people's lives at risk.

One man's liberty ends where another begins. You have the liberty to do what you want, lest this liberty turns into license. During extraordinary times such as a war, a leader may have to take measures that are unpopular to control the spread of the enemy. This has happened through the Civil War, World War II and yes, even the American Revolution. People are citing the founding fathers at these protests, but George Washington himself was opposed to Daniel Shay's rebellion which he saw a license and not liberty.

Simon Bolivar who I have quoted in many articles before said "true liberty aims to honor humanity and improve its lot, anything else is sheer illusion and I fear a dangerous illusion."

Many from the countryside may not understand the situation we are facing in cities, but it is serious. I only wish I was exaggerating with the following information- I know at least 10 people who have lost loved ones to this virus. Anybody can be carrying this virus and be asymptomatic, this is why if you are feeling fine you may be ok- but you can get another sick. Doesn't the Bible preach protecting the weaker brother?

I understand the concern many well-meaning citizens have about government interference but many of the businesses are deciding they want to be closed. If this virus gets worse, our entire livelihood will be totally destroyed.

I wish I was exaggerating my dear reader as I say that hospitals are lining up refrigerated trucks on the street for extra morgue space. I do not mean to cause you to be afraid, but please my dear reader be wise- this is my plea to you!

Another development that troubled me was people saying because it is not in their state, it is not their problem. We are all part of the same earth, and the problems that effect New York effect all of us. This virus will not stop at borders as people move around frequently, we need to stop seeing ourselves as members of a particular state and instead members of humanity.

In solidarity among all of us can we contain this virus. Staying at home is not the worse thing we can do, we need to use our creativity as well as the creativity of others to enjoy.

If we had the liberty to infect others- is that true liberty as it infringes on somebody else's right to live? Above all, protect life- the foundation of our human rights.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
