How many times do we hear people talk about going on fad diets? It seems to be all the rage today -- losing 10 pounds with a juice cleanse here, maybe no dairy there, and so on.
But the fad of removing gluten has certainly been the most popular (at least amongst suburban moms). Having an allergy to gluten makes the gluten-free fad seem outrageous. Who would knowingly give up pizza? Especially since this girl only ate it for a week and lost 5 pounds.
I recently interviewed Addie Doyle all about Gluten Free America, her new miniseries, and she does it all; she is an actress and an independent film producer -- all without eating a slice of pizza.
Doyle moved out to Los Angeles after graduating from The Tisch School of Arts at NYU. She then met a group of friends that all wanted to work on a similar project.
“We are in the middle of an election year so we wanted to do something comedic and something that was on the pulse of what is happening socially and politically, especially since dietary issues are on people’s minds in the election. So we bound these ideas together."
And Gluten Free America was born.
I do not want to give too much away because you have to see the hilariousness for yourself, but the episodes chronicle an election for council member in Santa Monica, told through the eyes of a local news outlet. There are a few candidates running: Vivian Varick -- campaigning on the platform of eradicating gluten production and its contributions to the melting of polar ice caps and a nuclear Iran, a vegan -- campaigning on an animal rights platform, and PB&J -- the Republican campaigning on a no change platform. Each episode introduces new characters (all with odd and hilarious names) and follows a plot line of campaign corruption and deceit all based on gluten.
GFA, encompasses six, 2-4 minute episodes. So essentially watching this miniseries will be 15 ridiculous minutes of your life where all you can do is laugh. Honestly, when I completed the last episode I was craving more. I asked Doyle what her next plans for the series are.
"We have talked about a second season because there are definitely places where we want to take the series farther. We want to talk about the Republican candidate, PB&J, and what happens there because I assume she wins the election by default, but her views are not necessarily the best either. In the end, one political tyrant may be overthrown but another is on the rise. I think that would be fun to dive into."
Everyone knows someone allergic to gluten and most have some interest in politics so no one can go wrong checking out these episodes. Start watching now and you will not be sorry.
