The Harmful Aspects of Facebook

In an age where communicating is as easy as the click of a button, a whole lot of negativity can follow suit.

The Harmful Aspects of Facebook

Social media transforms how we talk to people -- it gives us new ways of communicating with each other, and it lets the public catch up on various events quite easily. Social media is huge now. Facebook being testament to just how massive it has become.

Facebook started out small, but it expanded into a brand that has honestly changed lives. Facebook attracts at least one billion users every month, placing it at the center of our society's values. Facebook impacts our world significantly, but it carries some notable defects. I would actually argue that Facebook is more of an annoyance in today's world than anything else.

One reason as to why Facebook is not needed, is for its potential for creating unhappiness. According to the BBC, people's pleasure with their lives "declined" as they used the site more. Facebook makes people less happy with who they are, and it aids loneliness. Facebook lets its users appear happy and content, but it's actually inviting unfavorable comparisons to others. Seeing people doing fun things on Facebook while you're just sitting on the couch, watching another re-run of "The Big Bang Theory," will make you wonder what you are doing with your life. Observing the bliss of others on the site decreases overall satisfaction, which leads to the unhappiness that was discussed by the BBC.

Another reason for Facebook's lack of relevance is its encouragement of impudent behavior. In 2011, the Villa Rica Police Department admitted that it got "one to three complaints a week" about events involving harassing and stalking others on Facebook. The department also noted that they expected these problems to "increase." This demonstrates another flaw with Facebook- the simplicity of communicating with others on Facebook, as well as the ability to easily and freely comment on users' posts and photos, invites harmful treatment of others. People can cyber-bully their peers quite easily on Facebook, and they can get away with it due to the fact that they are behind a computer screen. Facebook encourages this kind of discourteous behavior, and the site is not needed due to this.

In general, Facebook is not a necessary force in today's society. The site leads to unhappiness, comparing yourself unfavorably with others, and the opportunity to harass your peers. Facebook is not needed in the modern world: it causes too much harm to truly be useful.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
