Saturday, in the SEC/Big12 challenge, Georgia faced off with Texas in Athens. The Dawgs put forth a gutsy display of effort and toughness against the Longhorns. Overall, Georgia shot 66.7 percent on the game and an absurd 70.6 percent from three-point range. The emphasis on the three-pointers is nothing new for the Dawgs this year but the team has struggled to shoot them efficiently all year long. Hopefully, this is a sign of things to come as the team's confidence is once again increasing.
Inserted into the starting lineup for this specific game, Junior guard Tyree Crump had the game-high 21 points. He shot 6-8 on three-pointers and added 5 assists, 3 rebounds, and a steal along with it.
Nic Claxton also put together a great night as he really came on in the second half. His lone three-pointer was one of the most important shots on the night. Claxton finished with 18 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals, and a block. It seems like every night, Nic fills all of the columns on the stat sheet.
Georgia is just 10-9 on the season after the Texas showing. Their SEC schedule has been nothing short of a gauntlet as the conference is much better this year than past iterations. The Dawgs are only 1-5 in conference play with the only SEC win coming against a Vanderbilt team that has yet to win a conference game.
With 5 of the next 10 games against ranked opponents, the schedule is only going to get harder. The Dawgs must focus on one game at a time during this run in order to not get ahead of themselves.
Tyree Crump is everything that the team has been lacking this year. He is an electric scorer and easily the best shooter on the team. Teshaun Hightower is similar to Crump in a few ways but is not as good of a shooter. Hightower had 18 points off the bench against Texas after being in the starting lineup on most nights. Crump led the offense with the starters and it looked very fluid, more so than usual.
The perimeter players for Georgia are the key. The big guys have been doing their jobs on most nights but the outside shooting has been the biggest problem. Georgia needs to keep the hot shooting going if the team wants to make a dent in the tough SEC schedule.
