Tell the world, the bachelor is a virgin! At least, that's this week's hot topic on social media. On Tuesday, ABC announced the new bachelor is Colton Underwood, a 26-year-old former NFL player and native of Washington, Illinois. While watching this season of "The Bachelorette," Colton expressed being extremely nervous about telling Becca Kurfin, the bachelorette, that he is a virgin. Why? Colton was ashamed to be a virgin and even admitted to lying about it in the past.
Colton is an all-around good guy. He runs a nonprofit that helps children with Cystic Fibrosis, which is how he spent his hometown date with the Becca. Colton is a handsome, successful, kind-hearted man, but all many people can focus on is him being a virgin. What's with that?
Colton deserves an award. To be an attractive, NFL player who loves kids and not to has had sex? That's some self-control for not only him but the ladies he's dated. This dilemma reaches far past his attractiveness and successful past, this stems from one stigma--that being a virgin is lame.
Why is it that waiting for the right person, or waiting for marriage, is a bad thing?
Sex is not meaningless for Colton, and it's praiseworthy for waiting this long. It probably wasn't easy; he probably had several girls wanting to sleep with him. If anything, this gives young boys and girls a role model to look up to, that they don't have to give their virginity to anyone; they can wait for the right person and be happy with how they lost their virginity.
"Being a virgin needs to be normalized - it's just who I am and what I believe in. I hold a lot of value in it and I hold it to a high standard. I'm just waiting for the right heart." Colton told People Magazine.
In addition to him being a virgin, there's been a huge concern for Colton as the bachelor since he previously starred on "Bachelor in Paradise." The Colton that we saw on "Bachelor in Paradise" did the best he could. He gave Tia a shot, which is what everyone deserves. It didn't work out with one girl, but does that mean he doesn't deserve love? Sure, Colton may have made a few mistakes, but hasn't everyone?
Colton will serve Bachelor Nation the best he can. All we can do now is pray to "The Bachelor" gods he does us better than Arie or Nick.
