College Student, Will Travel

You don't know where you're going, but you're going.

Traveling is for the experiences that we all want — to kiss someone under the Eiffel Tower, to see Dubai in all its glory and backpack through the Middle East. Sometimes we take a quick trip to escape, other times we travel to seek adventure and culture. Whatever the reason may be, traveling at a young age isn’t easy. You’re broke, you’re confused, you’re overwhelmed and believe it or not you’re not as flexible as you thought you could be. And if you’re traveling with friends, good luck with that. You won’t be able to make up your mind and you’ll regret booking your flight last minute.

Spring break is the week long vacation every college student lives for. It takes a great deal of planning and organization but if you’re juggling college life in Manhattan there’s absolutely no way you’ll be booking a trip to Europe. Most likely you’ll wind up looking for flights two months before your break. At that point, you are looking at a 400 dollar flight to Florida and you’ll take anything just to get out of the city.

You are just a college student, you should be spending your spring break in South Padre or Cabo but that’s not the case. Instead, with your busy city life, you are looking to escape New York for even a few days just like the summer season 9-5ers who leave for Montauk at the end of the work week to celebrate the weekend with a bottle of rose. Yes, maybe going to college in New York City turned you into some magical adult who won’t be spending a typical spring break.

You may think you’re an adult simply because you won’t be getting incredibly drunk in Mexico. But you still are the broke college student who can’t afford a 200 dollar round trip ticket to Fort Lauderdale. But why Fort Lauderdale in the first place? It’s the cheapest option and you won’t be surrounded by college students, you’ll be spending time with the retirees getting some well deserved R&R. After all, you deserve some peace so forget the spring break cliches and treat yourself.

Traveling with friends is great. You get to split up some of the costs but the worst part is, you won’t be able to collaborate or even make up your mind. It’s not because you don’t get along. It’s simply because you are all too damn young to actually get your shit together. Let's face it, with all of the travel websites out there you don't even know which website to book your trip from. It's a lot of decisions, it's a lot of stress and not a single one of you will be able to cope with it all. So what seems to happen is that you'll plan a date to book your tickets together, to only wind up more overwhelmed and cutting the booking even closer to your expected travel dates.

If this is something you've never done, good luck. I'm not saying this is the scariest life event to happen, but it's the second most stressful compared to having your taxes done by Tax day. It's spring break and you deserve to go away, but plan ahead just to be safe, save your money and avoid pulling your hair out.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
