I absolutely love traveling. But I have found that it is extremely hard to do as a college student, but it is possible. There are a bunch of different tools or ways that help college students travel even on a tight budget. One of those ways is to partake in study abroad where scholarships are available. While in college it is easier to see the world because there are those scholarships, but there is also the opportunity to use student loans to pay for the travel as well. One of the ways that I am able to afford my travel to 11 different countries is because it is a part of my study abroad trip and there are scholarships which are helping me pay for it.
Another way to travel, even if it’s only cross the United States is to get “bumped” off an already scheduled flight. Another way that I am able to travel to see family is that whenever I have a flight scheduled, I will offer to be bumped when a flight is over booked (which happens pretty often). When flights are over booked they will ask for volunteers to be “bumped” (give up your seat) for a certain amount of money and then they will rebook it for free (at least they do on Delta). Also, if you cannot be rebooked till the next day they will usually give you a voucher for a hotel and food. Also, the miles that accumulate on these flights can be saves under your “skymiles” account which can also help cover the cost of flights. By having my seat bumped once I have been able to pay for two more round trip flights on the airlines expense.
There are other tools that one can use to help pay for traveling (whether it be domestic or internationally) and these tools can be found by simply doing a bit of research. Not everyone knows about these tools/tips and they are very helpful to college students as we try to see the world.
