Everyone always complains about the books we read in high school. While I admit that some of them are boring, a lot of them have a good story and especially deep meanings. They hold untold truths of society and how the world around us has changed for either better or worse than the times that the books were written in. These are my 3 favorite books that we have read in high school
1. Brave New World
If a book has science as one of the bigger elements in the book, I tend to have an interest in it. This books follows the story of an outsider who never feels at place in the place he is put into, the World State. This allows him to feel a connection to those who read the book, especially in high school. At times, everyone feels left out and the protagonist, John, can relate to those in high school. I especially loved this book due to the science factor of contraception and and soma. The blind eye people turned to the government all made for a great story.
2. 1984
Continuing with the list, 1984 is a throwback to Freshman year. This book told the tale of a man who is part of 3 major world states and are always at war with each other and being under the constant eye of Big Brother. This story connects with the readers in the form of rebellion and other characteristics of the book.
3. The Glass Castle
This book was heartwarming and a tale of how hard work can take you far all at one time. The memoir follows the story of Jeanette Walls the struggle of her growing up in a highly dysfunctional family despite being happy. It also contains elements of fantasy in that they are looking for a happy ever after but cannot find it in the book. All in all its a good read for those who enjoy a story of hard work and perserveran.ce
