The Oscars have come and gone, and this year’s certainly did not disappoint. Jimmy Kimmel, in my opinion, killed the hosting gig with perfectly tasteful jokes that will still somehow be inappropriate to some. (Those people need to take a chill pill and go back to watching Disney).
My personal favorite movie of the year, Shape of Water, took home the well-deserved award for Best Picture. For those of you who are hesitant to see it since it is literally about a woman falling in love with a fish, just put your reservations about fish sex aside and go see it (you won’t regret it). While the Oscars this year did a great job finally giving actresses their well-deserved recognition and honoring those we lost this past year, there was one thing they got horribly wrong. Two words: Kobe Bryant.
For those of you who didn’t watch, Kobe Bryant is now an Academy Award winner. I know what you’re thinking, "isn’t he a basketball player?" You are correct! Bryant won for his film Dear Basketball in the category of Best Animated Short.
Naturally, all the Brads and Chads took to Snapchat and Twitter following Bryant’s win saying things like, “Is there anything this guy can’t do?” or “THAT’S MY MANZ”. I was not enraged by this win because it was a major upset (similar to the poorly performed song “Remember Me” winning over the incredible vocal production “This is Me”), but because I have never witnessed that much hypocrisy.
Over the last few months, Hollywood has been making huge strides in dealing with issues of sexual assault through movements like #MeToo and #TimesUp. But despite all that, they still awarded an Oscar to a rapist. Most of my generation was under the age of 10 when the incident occurred, so I’ll give you a brief recap.
In 2003, Kobe Bryant was accused of raping a 19-year-old woman in Colorado. Due to insurmountable evidence, including remnants of the victim’s blood found on Bryant’s clothing, he was charged with sexual assault and false imprisonment. However, the two decided on settling a civil suit so the criminal charges were dropped. I know that one is innocent until proven guilty in this country, but the fact that the Academy chose to put this incident aside and give that man an Oscar is inexcusable.
It truly baffles me that the women in the audience who bravely shared their stories of sexual assault this year, such as Salma Hayek, didn’t start a riot right then and there. If I was there, I would have gone all Kanye, gotten up on that stage, ripped that Oscar out of his filthy hand, and said some choice words to the Academy.
Not that anybody from the Academy may ever read this, but I am ashamed of you. I know that Bryant’s case was 15 years ago and it is no longer in the forefront of our minds, but you have insulted the incredible women and men that have been pioneers of progress over these last few months.
As a survivor, I have been absolutely ecstatic to see members of Hollywood bravely leading the charge while speaking openly about their own experiences. By presenting an Oscar to Kobe, you might as well have punched us in the stomach. I am thoroughly disgusted and I know I am not alone. If the majority of Hollywood is going to talk the talk, they better learn how to walk the walk, because, time's up.
