Avril Lavigne, a great singer through the 2000’s that impacted everyone’s middle school days. If you were having a rough day, she was the girl to turn to. She knew all about boys, the up’s and down’s of relationships, breakups, and most importantly, girl power. Here’s a little recap of how she got us through those awkward middle school days.
“He was a skater boy, she said see you later boy he wasn’t good enough for her. Now he’s a superstar slammin’ on his guitar, did your pretty face see what he’s worth?” -Sk8er Boi
First off, Avril Lavigne helped me pick my first boyfriend. Thanks for teaching me not to judge a book by their cover, because you can’t see talents based on clothing (or Heelys).
“Yeah you said hey. Since that day. You stole my heart and you’re the one to blame. Yeah. And that’s why I smile.” -Smile
When he said to hi to me in math class. That’s when I knew it was real. And I always showed up smiling to that class (even though it was way too early in the morning).
“It’s a damn cold night, tryin’ to figure out this life. Won’t you take me by the hand take me somewhere new, I don’t know you who you are but I, I’m with you.” -I’m With You
My reaction to my first date in seventh grade. And really, it was a damn cold night for holding hands behind the football stadium.
“Why do you have to go and make things so complicated? I see the way you’re acting like you’re somebody else gets me frustrated.” -Complicated
And when I saw my boyfriend eating lunch with other girls. “You’re tryin’ to be cool, you look like a fool.” At least someone knows how I feel.
“But honestly I just need to be a little crazy. All my life I’ve been good but now, whoa, what the hell!” -What the Hell
When I started eating lunch with other boys. Yeah boyfriend, I know you’re watching me across the cafeteria. And mom, I’m sorry but I need to be a little crazy. “Don’t hold me back,” a literal thought in middle school.
“You were everything, everything that I wanted. We were meant to be, supposed to be, but we lost it. All of the memories so close to me just fade away. All this time you were pretending so much for my happy ending.”-My Happy Ending
After my first break up, this was my jam. I thought we would be together forever, but it was short lived.
“And I remember all those crazy things you said, you left them running in my head. You’re always there, you’re everywhere, but right now I wish you were here.” -Wish You Were Here
This was my other post-breakup jam, the one for when I was actually missing my ex. Hahaha, oh the days.
“When you’re gone the pieces of my heart are missing you. When you’re gone the face I came to know is missing too.” -When You’re Gone
But not missing him too much, considering he sat across the room in math class.
“When it’s you and me we don’t need no one to tell us who to be. We’ll keep turning up the radio.” -Rock N Roll
I can be myself. And if Avril Lavigne can be a famous pop-star with her thick eyeliner and ripped jeans, so can I (maybe not the best idea for sixth grade).
“Hey, hey, you, you! I don’t like your girlfriend! No way! No way! I think you need a new one! Hey, hey, you you, I could be your girlfriend.” -Girlfriend
After I was ready to move on from my seventh grade ex, I went searching for a new boy. And Avril Lavigne had my back that even boys with girlfriends aren’t impossible to make yours. Good times, good times.
“They say just grow up, but they don’t know us.” -Here’s To Never Growing Up
When I couldn’t stop listening and watching High School Musical through middle school. Avril Lavigne knew that growing up was a trap, even if I didn’t.
Though every Avril Lavigne song I had was the clean version, and I didn’t realize she ever spoke about getting drunk or doing anything more than holding hands with boys, she still got me through those middle school days. Thanks for always having my back, Girlfriend.
