Hi friends!
Did you know that May is Foster Care Awareness month? Well, now you do!
This article is not going to be your typical article! This time my entire point is to give you some facts and stats that might make your eyes open just a little bit about the things that are happening in the foster care system.
Not every state has the same age out age when it comes to the foster care system in that state. Some states the age out age is eighteen and in others, it is 21. Every single year around the country we have thousands of youth age out of the system and end up on the streets with nowhere to go.
Not every foster placement is with strangers. In fact, you may see kids who are living with their aunts, uncles, and grandparents instead of with their parents. Those that live with other family members are often in what is called a kinship care.
Every state has a little bit of a different foster care system and each state has a different protocol for several different things. For example, in some states, the goal is to try and reunite parents and child or children as often as possible but in other states, the goal is to do what is best for the child or children.
In the state of Michigan currently about 14,000 children in foster care.
If you or someone you know is interested in becoming a foster parent go to your state's Department of Human Services website and search of the site to find out what it takes in your state to become a foster parent.
By becoming a foster parent you could change a child's life!
And if you are interested to wear blue as often as possible during the month of May as it is the color for foster care awareness.
