As April comes to an end, mother nature has finally decided to loosen her grips and has given us the most wished for gift of all: Spring! As May approaches and we bring out our pastels and flowery dresses, not only does our wardrobe change but so does our desire to leave our bedrooms. New York City in the springtime is probably one of the most favorable times of the year. The subways are not yet too steamy, and the foliage has just begun to bloom. Adorable dogs line the streets and people begin to dine outside. The days feel longer and the atmosphere overall is simply brighter! Yet, with all this time and lovely weather at our doorsteps, what shall we do with it? Head out to NYC, of course! Here are eight very different ideas to do on a spring day!
1. Have a Picnic in Central Park... with Shakespeare!
What better way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon than to cozy up with a comfy blanket, mixed fruit, and the beautiful sights and sounds of Central Park! Get creative! Break out the wine and cheeses or simply pack a classic PB& J to make the perfect Spring picnic date. If you're into Shakespeare, you can even watch reenactments of famous plays with "Shakespeare in the Park" which runs all the way through August!
2. Go to a Yankees / Mets Game!
Whether you're a fan of the famous Yankees or Mets, seeing either teams play is a super fun way to spend a Spring day!
Sports aren't everyone's cup of tea, but the atmosphere is surely one to love. Dress up in your gear, get a famous Nathan's hotdog, and sing take me out to the ball game until you make it onto the big screen! This is a perfect way to spend quality family time, or even as a date!
3. Check out The Tribeca Film Festival!
For those who are not so much a fan of the outdoors, and would prefer seeing some really special films, this is the event for you. From April 18th to the 29th you can see the power of film displayed through so many voices in the community. Diversity and social activism is a huge theme this year, so get ready to be blown away!
4. Visit the Brooklyn Botanic Garden
Nothing says serenity more than freshly bloomed cherry blossom trees. Bring a book, lunch, or even have your own personal photoshoot. Throughout the Spring there are several events throughout the week such as the garden after dark and the Orchid Show!
Pro Tip: Fridays before noon are free admission!
5. Go Flea Market Hopping! (Weekends Only)
If you love a good bargain, one of a kind items, and sifting through endless piles, flea markets should be at the top of your spring to- do list. On Saturdays & Sundays check out Hell's Kitchen Flea (W 39th St.), Chelsea Flea (W 25th St.), and Brooklyn Flea (various locations)! They have every item your heart could desire. Vintage clothing, antiques, art, records, movies, etc. Not to mention the thrill of a good find and bargain is truly rewarding!
6. Walk the Brooklyn Bridge!
For amazing views of the Manhattan skyline take the subway into Brooklyn, and then walk the bridge back. The fun does not end at the bridge though! Walk around Dumbo for the day. Sit in Brooklyn Bridge Park, get some ice cream from Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory, and maybe even ride Jane's Carousel while overlooking a picturesque view.
7. The Frieze Art Fair
For the art lover, the Frieze Art Fair is the perfect Spring paradise. I cannot think of anything better than open air markets. Walk around for the day while admiring and possibly purchasing art from over a thousand of contemporary artists!
8. Indulge at the Ninth Avenue International Food Festival
If you are a foodie like myself, this could be dangerous. On May 19th and 20th, between 42nd and 57th streets and 9th avenue will be lined with delicious vendors from every cuisine you have been dying to try. Get ready for your mouth to water and make sure to come with an empty stomach!
