Life can sometimes be overwhelming. Trying to balance everything that makes up our day to day lives can feel almost impossible. If you're anything like me, you even stress out about being stressed out. Something to keep in mind is that you don't need an expensive retreat or spa weekend to relieve your stress. These stress relief methods are easily accomplished and will leave you feeling much more like yourself.
1. Meditate
Some people might not believe in the power of meditation. My advice to these people is to not rule this option out until they have tried. There are many techniques and methods you can try. Start off with standing up tall and breathing in controlled, exaggerated breaths. Inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth. This is a simple meditation technique that will lower your heart rate and relax your muscles.
2. Manage your time
Write down everything you need to do. This way you can see it out on a list. When finishing something, cross it out. By doing this, you can even feel a sense of accomplishment. Also, you can free up "brain room" and not feel like you need to remember everything you need to do by memory.
3. Engage in physical activity
Not only is this healthy for your body, it can be an instant stress relief. You will get out excess energy and not spend your nights tossing and turning. Go on a 15-minute walk around the neighborhood. Ask a friend to come along with you. You can even encourage one another to make this a daily routine.
4. Eat a healthy diet
“You are what you eat”. You can't actually eat stress, but there are some foods that can contribute to it, and caffeine is one of them. Drinking too much coffee or energy drinks and wear your body down. Caffeine stimulates your nervous system and can make your body feel jittery. Some other foods to stay away from when experiencing high stress are alcohol, sugary foods, and foods with high sodium.
5. Use essential oils
It is known that a smell can instantly bring a person back to a certain memory or time. A smell can do more than just this. There are tiny holes that lead our smells directly to our brain. Aromatherapy essential oils when used correctly, can balance your mind, body, and spirit. Again, don't rule this out until you've tried!
6. Take time for yourself
Whatever it is that is consuming your mind is not worth constantly fussing about. Don't respond to work emails past a certain designated time to give your mind a time to relax. In this time, read a book or take a bubble bath. Do something for you.
7. Talk with a friend
Talking about why you are so worked up can help. Your friend can give you helpful advice and give you confirmation that you are not alone. After all, what else are friends for!
8. Learn more about stress
These tips are just the beginning. To take stress head on you must educate yourself with the proper methods that best suits your lifestyle.
The next time you are feeling overwhelmed, I hope you can refer back to these steps. Remember that stress is a constant battle but there are ways to overcome it.
