Don't get me wrong, I loved my days as a server. I loved talking to the people and being on the beach every day. I genuinely liked serving people. My co-workers were amazing and always made every day seem like a party. However, there were those customers that made me want to quit sometimes. Some were rude, thought they were the only table I was serving, or just plain mean. Here are seven things you should NEVER do to your server.
1. Do not eat 90 percent of your food and then complain about it and ask your server to take it back.
Servers want your experience to be exceptional. However, when you complain about food when you have eaten the majority of it, that makes no sense, and it will irritate your server.
2. Do not wave, whistle, or snap at your server.
Please get to know your server's name. They are your server, NOT your servant.
3. Do not tell your server that they are the best server that you ever had and not tip them.
4. Coming in right before closing is just annoying.
If you see that the restaurant is being cleaned, please have the courtesy to come back tomorrow. Everyone is exhausted and would like to go home.
5. Never, ever walk right past the hostess and pick your own table.
The hostess is there for a reason. Every server is on a rotation, and you are sat where you are sat for a reason. If you ignore the hostess and pick your own table, it is likely that the server will not even know you're there until minutes later. So, just don't do it and make everyone's lives easier.
6. Do not run your server to death.
We really do not mind getting you what you need. But, when we ask you if you need anything else, tell us EVERYTHING you will need right then instead of thinking of something every time we walk by. This only slows us down
7. To the coworkers: If you ask to borrow my pen, do not borrow it permanently.
This one is self-explanatory. Stealing a fellow server's pen is wrong on so many levels. Just never do it.
