Ocean Up

With back to school coming up shortly and with all the kick-ass women we've seen on TV recently, I figured I would combine those things with some music to bring you a list of inspirational girl power songs. Each one of these is special to me because it's helped me get through a tough time and given me hope.

1. In The Dark - Olivia Holt

The newly released pop song speaks of finding yourself and finding who you are among others. Pulling yourself out of the dark and into the light, so to speak.

Lines to learn from: Tonight I'm yours. As the shadows break apart, we show all that we are. Yeah I'm ready to restart if you can find my heart in the dark.

2. Activated - Cher Lloyd

The catchy rap-infused tune talks of getting recharged and ready to handle whatever life throws at you. Super fun and makes you feel like you're ready to conquer the world.

Lines to learn from: I'm charged up, I'm getting activated. Just wait on it, when I do the damn thing, just watch me. Hold up, I ain't done yet.

3. Revival - Selena Gomez

This thoughtful title track symbolizes rebirth and how change can be good for us all to come into our own. Very fitting for self-esteem and a definite confidence booster.

Lines to learn from: I'm reborn in every moment, so who knows what I'll become. I've been under self-restoration. I'll begin again, reaching for the truth. I'll admit it's been painful, but I'm so grateful. I'm just trying to get to me. What I've learned is so vital, more than just survival. This is my revival. This is a revival.

4. New Day - Tamar Kaprelian

The power ballad talks about finding the strength to break your bad habits and discovering new ways of doing things. Super uplifting and the video is beautiful too.

Lines to learn from: Before the light, I found the dark. Before tonight, I fell apart. Frozen up, I've realized that something's gotta change. It took a crash to understand that time kept slipping through my hands. I never used to know the sun will shine after the rain. Say goodbye to the way I was before, say hello to a new way. I was lost but I've found what I was looking for, say hello to a new day.

5. Just a Name - Megan & Liz

If you've ever been hurt by someone or something didn't turn out how planned, just chart another course and move on with your life. That's what this country-pop hybrid tells you to do and I couldn't agree more.

Lines to learn from: I just needed a change, and now I'm doing okay. You're just one heartbreak removed, I did what I had to do. I went and loved someone new and I got over you. I almost forgot the rules and how to play your game, I almost don't remember you, you're just a name. Just a couple letters that don't mean a thing together, you're just a memory.

6. Come Clean - Hilary Duff

This song is classic (and for good reason). The metaphors of rain washing away your problems and learning to live with the storms (aka: obstacles) in your life - doesn't get any better than that for a message.

Lines to learn from: Let the rain fall down and wake my dreams. Let it wash away my sanity. Cause I want to feel the thunder, I want to scream. Let the rain fall down, I'm coming clean.

In honor of Mother’s Day, I have been thinking of all the things my mom does for my family and me. Although I couldn’t write nearly all of them, here are a few things that moms do for us.

They find that shirt that’s right in front of you, but just you can’t seem to find.

Take the time to thank that one friend in your life you will never let go of.

Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
