5 Things You Didn’t Know about Grey’s Anatomy

Everyone has secrets, even the incredible Shonda Rhimes TV show Grey's Anatomy.

5 Things You Didn’t Know about Grey’s Anatomy

Obviously, we don't know everything that goes on behind the scenes while TV shows are being filmed. But, Grey's Anatomy is one of the most complex shows ever, on screen and behind the camera. Here's a few reasons why.

1. Most of the actors auditioned for different roles than they were given.

Isaiah Washington, or Dr. Burke, auditioned to play Derek Shepherd, not Dr. Burke. Sandra Oh, or Christina Yang, auditioned for the role of Dr. Bailey. Similarly, Alex Karev wasn't even in the original script. They had to add him in after the pilot was shot.

2. Patrick Dempsey and Ellen Pompeo didn’t know Derek’s character was married for a long time.

Dempsey found out about Addison Montgomery mid-season one, and Pompeo found out at the end of season one. It was a shock to both of them in real life, as well as to Meredith in the show!

3. They use real organs and surgeons for surgeries.

Well, the organs usually come from cows, but they are real! And the medical producer brings in real surgeons for surgeries so that everything you see on the show is as realistic as possible. Some of these things actually happen during real surgeries!

4. Justin Chambers, or Dr. Karev, had five kids and a wife of ten years when the show first started.

Is this why Karev was so good with kids and somehow always found his way back to pediatrics? It couldn't hurt.

5. Isaiah Washington (Dr. Burke) was fired from the show.

When Burke left the show, it was a shock to Dr. Yang and audiences everywhere. But, it was not his choice. Washington used a homophobic slur toward T.K. Knight (George O'Malley), and was fired from Grey's.

First Snow
Sorina Bindea

I have never understood why grown-ups complain when the leaves are all off the trees, and the temperatures take a decided turn towards the zero on the thermometer. I hear complaints about the impending winter weather, and the driving in the snow and ice. We live in Pennsylvania, so I bite my tongue instead of stating the obvious: Maybe you should move to a warmer climate?

But as is the case with many bands, those popular singles only scratch the surface.

Multiple countries flags on poles

For an organization that literally unites the nations, it amazes me how little is taught about the United Nations in schools, or at least where I went to school. It wasn't until I went to college and got a higher education that I learned the basics of the United Nations. I believe that every American should know at least the basics of what the United Nations does, especially since our country is one of the 5 permanent members, and what better day to do that than United Nations Day (today!). So here are the main "organs" of the United Nations:
